That might get a little tricky....

True. Tried running cleanmgr.exe from \Windows\WinSxS\amd64_microsoft-windows-cleanmgr_31bf3856ad364e35_10.0.17134.1_none_52c4c2b8c6b6371d\cleanmgr.exe and it doesn't run so saving that won't work. Wonder why?

How did you add the Link Properties tab to the file properties dialog. I like that.

If you want to save and run a sytem app that has been removed from the latest version of Windows there are two files you require to copy from an old version, the .exe and its associated .mui file which is found in a language-specific subfolder in the folder containing the .exe.

For an en-us install you'll need a copy of the 1803 (or earlier) cleanmgr.exe from C:\Windows\System32 and cleanmgr.exe.mui from C:\Windows\System32\en-US. Place the exe in any folder of your choice. It does NOT have to be System32. It will run from any folder, even one on a usb stick. Wherever you put it, you must create an en-US subfolder and put the .mui there. For my English International install the sub-folder I need is en-GB.

This works for all apps I've tried, such as MS Paint, by having separate folders for each you can even run multiple versions simultaneously. I see no reason why cleanmgr should be any different.

Thanks Bree, works perfectly. Copied \Windows\WinSxS\amd64_microsoft-windows-cleanmgr_31bf3856ad364e35_10.0.17134.1_none_52c4c2b8c6b6371d\cleanmgr.exe to D:\temp and copied C:\Windows\System32\en-US\cleanmgr.exe.mui to D:\temp\EN-US and cleanmgr run correctly from there.

I believe it's because I have this installed, maybe not, but I believe so. Not intended to start any debate concerning it's merits, or lack thereof. I just find it easier that command line MKLNK.

    Link Shell Extension

I checked a VM of 1803 where it is not installed, and do not have the tab on properties.

Also, throws a hardlink icon symbol in explorer.

Thanks Dick. I already had a copy of LSE saved from 2016 but had not installed it for some reason. Read up on it a bit and installed it and it works great, thanks.

Option One or Option Two in this tutorial do exactly the same job.

Yup, I always use Option Two. . . seems to work fine. .

Other then for Defender clean up, I don't run Disk Cleanup at all anymore. . .

Showing right before, and right after running. . . .
