I've never found defragging HDD's even from as far back as Windows 3.11 the slightest bit of use ever.

Dont ever ( !) defrag HDDs with OS-backups on it ( Acronis, Macrium,Aomei , etc )...............Your backups could not function anymore !!
Do you have a link to the documentation to support that? I'd be interested to read it. Thanks.

Ok. Was not sure. I have never heard that defragging destroys backup images. Didn't want new members or guests to get the wrong impression.

Oh, not true! It's just that without some details, statements like you made could be easily misconstrued. Everybody's experience is important. That's why we are here.

If you could explain a little what happen with your experience, it could help others.

Maybe I'm not remembering correctly, but weren't there at least occasional problems with defragging apparently causing issues with images when those images were made with the built-in imaging tool under Windows 7?

As I recall, the problem surfaced when you tried to restore---everything appeared OK while making the image file, only to be disappointed when it mattered later.

No idea. Haven't used that in years. But it wouldn't surprise me. May be part of the reason MS is deprecating that backup option and recommending to use third party vendor software.
