    Windows Explorer Issue

I’m running Windows 10 64 Bit and for awhile now Windows Explorer will hang quite frequently where I have to open Task Manager and restart it. What happens is say I’ll right-click on a folder to rename or copy and it will hang or where my icons will just turn blank. I’ll have to restart Explorer to get it back to normal. It may work right for awhile but will eventually revert back to hanging. I just ran a chkdsk C: /f command prompt to correct any errors but don’t think it found any.

I’ve read Windows 10 has a Reset process where it does a Clean Install but will leave your files and folders in tact. Do you think at I’m at the point where it may require a reset.

Will doing a Reset present create any issues since I originally upgraded from Windows 7? This is a computer I had built for me a few years ago.

You almost certainly don't need to re-install. This problem is quite common.

To fix it, download ShellExView and disable the context menu entry causing the problem.

First disable all the non-ms context menu items and then re-enable them one by one until you find the culprit. For me the Intel igfxDTCM context menu item.

As lx07 says, you probably don't need to go to that extreme. I'll leave you in lx07's capable hands, but I'd just like to add one thing.

Something that isn't made clear enough in all the information MS provide about a 'Reset' is that it will remove all your installed apps. There should be a big red warning along these lines...

    warning   Warning
All your 3rd-party software will be removed as part of a Reset or Clean Start. You'll have to reinstall everything after a Reset. This even includes Microsoft Office, so think very carefully before continuing.

All too many people misread the "keep all your files" as meaning they get to keep all the games, browsers and other programs they've installed. No, 'your files' just means your documents, photos, spreadsheets and the like - not much use if you've lost all the apps that open them. A lot of people have done a Reset, then posted here asking how to get back all their apps - the answer is you can't

Note that Shellexview may not list all context menu entries.

If necessary, you can use e.g. Autoruns (free from MS) which lists explorer context menu entries - but much more besides, so can appear daunting at first.

Thanks Ix07 hopefully you have the fix!

Do I understand correctly that I wait until Explorer hangs again before I use ShellExView?

No, you disable -say- a number of extensions using Shellexview (no need to log off etc) then see if it hangs. If not, disable more, try again. If you disable all (non-MS) extensions thus and it still hangs, move on to Autoruns and continue with the extensions there, if any remain.

Ok think I've got it but you say to disable just a few to see if it hangs but if it doesn't why would I need to keep disabling more? If it doesn't hang after disabling say ten extensions then it has to be one of the ten wouldn't it?

    Sorry, should have been
If it does, disable more, try again.

If there are many, a binary chop approach works well.

But note- there could be more than one....

Ok that makes more sense to me just disabled a few so we'll see what happens. I'll keep in mind it could be more than one thanks!

Quick question...what does it mean if the context menu entries are shaded pink?
