I would move to Macrium but that is not what you are here for... slow downs.
TC pointed out that you are also falling behind in upgrades for your current version, you mentioned you had them blocked.
Any thought on replacing drive?
I assume you are still experiencing the slow downs.
Did you try clean boot and did the issue reoccur.

-- Yes, I have deliberately blocked win10 updates. I find these updates actually harmful to my setting: every time I update the system destabilizes dramatically: drivers don't work properly etc. I don't think this is the cause for slow down as the slowdown occurred one or two months ago, and Win update is disabled for a year now.
-- My speculation is that the slowdown occurs due to Mailbird: a great mail client which for some reason seems to eat up all my resources. I have stopped using it for now and there is no slowdown now. But I'm still not sure about this, I need to test this more.

I hear you on updates.
I do the updates, I block driver updates. If you have the latest and greatest they may work but I too have experienced driver issues with Windows "Helping" me.

Have you tried Thunderbird?
Regarding your drive space, you sound very knowledgeable but I will still ask, have you done disk cleanup?

-- Yes I tried for years Thunderbird. It is not good for my purposes. I actually don't recall now why I left it (maybe because it didn't have conversation view, or that the conversation view was really buggy), but then I switched to emClient; this seems good, but then became too slow either. I believe emClient has a bad software design, since it is too sluggish. I switched to Mailbird which is really excellent, but now it seems also to cause severe problems to the computer's overall performance.
For now I simply us Gmail on firefox. It seems that there is no good, reliable, and efficient, email client for windows (I presume outlook is good; but for some reason I never tried it...)

I don't think I would say Outlook is good.
Yes when it works it is wonderful, nice layout, tools, etc but when it doesn't......
They added automated client setup, which is a real pain if you are not on a standard domain, gmail, outlook, yahoo.
and if something should go wrong with your profile with it two addresses, or five, you can kiss that goodbye. The standard fix is create new, like when your Windows profile doesn't work. Total BS.
Have you tried the Win 10 mail client.? Basic so may not meet your needs.

I have no issues with updates, except I have chosen not to upgrade to 1803. I guess it depends on your hardware platform as to whether drivers are an issue or not.
Nor do I have any great problems with Thunderbird, except it seems its future is not so certain. I don't know what 'conversation view' is.
I use Pop peeper + Spamihilator as a sort of preview/handle email and respond (via Tbird) and delete, and then Thunderbird + Spamihilator to sort and file.
I couldn't commend the Mail app as a serious option.

Conversation view or threads is when the email systems tries to tie all emails on the same subject into a thread like this forum.
I send you, you respond, I respond. If others are CC'ed then they are lumped together instead of showing as individual messages. They are all grouped together like a forum thread.
Some love it, some hate it.
I liked it when I was on vacation at work. You could come back and read a thread.
Gmail on their phone app decided you should not be able to disable..... after they took the heat for a year they acknowledged they will take the settings from your gmail account and propagate to phone.
