Chuck, I'd like to learn more! How is the protection sloppy?
Hi RolandJS!
After I experienced the EXTREME performance penalty of the Meltdown Protection (For some reason, Microsoft did not apply any Spectre protection), I continued to examine whether in fact my PC's BASIC operation was being IMPEDED .. which it clearly was.
Being a hobbyist programmer, it was beyond my personal ken to unravel the exact approach by which this patch provides protection for the straightforward prediction-glitch in Intel's CPUs, so, I looked into opinions of experts in that field, through which it seems clear that the patch does not directly block the CPU's prediction function but rather tosses a blanket over any possible effect of an intruder's search into the computer's possibly affected memory-blocks — with the result of directly hampering the interaction between storage & memory--the foundational operation of your computer.
Also keep in mind that this is a BLANKET response anticipating potential malicious malware searching for a couple juicy bits for capture among hundreds of millions of bits, for which, in my opinion, a more intelligent reaction would be thorough malware protection which would obviously impose a Far, FAR smaller, & highly specific, impact upon your system's performance.

I get no measurable slowdown at all on mine after either the first or second part of those Meltdown/Spectre security updates for Intel processors.
OK, I can read about the supposed slowdown disaster on the internet, but the reality is vastly different, and that is on a processor 5 yo which are supposedly slowed more.
