I don't see the point of separating personal data from the OS either. That's why we do image backups. If I have to do a Clean install or a reset, I simply restore my data from the Macrium backup or from data I save in other places via other methods (Mirror Folder for one).

I find it a lot simpler.

    Just my $.02 worth.

Equally, I keep at least two or three image backups. I see no point in imaging backuping my data multiple times - it slows down the backup, and just wastes storage space.

By keeping data separate, my image backups are lean and mean and I can optimise my data backup differently e.g.

I backup critical data immediately by use of onedrive. Less critical data (and the critical data) get backed up weekly to external drives. Non critical data e.g. video files I can redownload easily get backed up monthly.

I do not relocate user directories but just use them as temporary folders.

In any case I have an 250 GB SSD for OS+progs and a separate drive for data.

Indeed, some might choose a half way house e.g. documents and pictures on C drive, but store large videos on a data drive.

Even if I could afford a 1+TB SSD, I would still partititon drive 250 GB OS+Progs, 750 GB data.

There is no right or wrong way and each user should choose a data handling and backup strategy that works for them.

    Hi folks

If you have say a lot of essentially non changing data such as some multi-media files etc it's pointless taking those in image backups regularly -- one initial backup and then every so often if you add new files just back those up.

Personally the OS IMO is always better kept away from other non os related data. For small amounts of personal data such as work office type docs you can store say on various cloud servers etc.

Keeping OS lean and mean it's fast and easy to backup and I do it daily as a matter of course -- only takes a few minutes - always worth it -.

To show what I mean look at screen shot below

I don't think you'd want to image this Disk very often if ever !!!

I keep my personal data on a separate partition. That way I can easily tinker and backup the OS partition while not touching any personal data. This method has got both its pros and cons.
