Is My CPU To Hot?

Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-2300 CPU @ 2.80GHz
Mainboard Model: ASUS P8H67-M PRO
BIOS: American Megatrends Inc. version 1104
AMD Radeon HD 7800 Series
Microsoft Windows 10 (10.0) Home 64-bit (Build 17134)


I just recently bought my nephews desktop computer (see above specs). A couple days ago I turned it on and it gave a CPU fan error. Ever since I been using SpeedFan to monitor the temperatures. My CPU temperature is constanly up into the 88-90C range even when I'm not doing anything. And the CPU Fan spped is listed at 645 RPM.

According to Speedfan I don't have any other Fans running but there are two case fans running all the time, one on the back and one on top.

Here are all the temperatures listed by Speedfan at the time of this writing:

Oddly, the only time the temperature seems to come down is when I'm doing something to push up the CPU load and then the fan starts spinning a little bit faster bringing the CPU temperature down. So my system starts out hot and cools down the more I use it, which seems strangly odd somhow.

So is there anything wrong with my system here that I should be concerned about? Do you think I need to replace the CPU fan? Or is there a BIOS setting to speed up the fan?

Yes 90 °C is very hot, first i'd try to open and clean with air can if it is a desktop, otherwise some repair is necessary.

Look inside while it's running.

If the CPU fan is in fact spinning reasonably well, you've got some other problem. But I wouldn't necessarily trust that Speedfan reading of 645 RPM.

I'd install another monitoring app like HWInfo to see if it confirms what Speedfan says.

Most PCs can tolerate no case fans at all. Temps will be high, but not to the danger point. Unless it's under heavy stress. I ran mine without case fans as an experiment and temps were in the 50s, about 20 above normal.

Not sure, but I think that generation of Intel processors will automatically shut down if the temps go beyond a certain point--probably near 100. But 90 is very hot, like what you'd see on a laptop under heavy gaming stress.

When I'm in the BIOS the temperature is in the 30 + Celsius range. I downloaded a program called Speccy and it's saying my CPU temp is 37 C (98.6 F). HWInfo also suggests that the temperature is around 37 C. I think Speedfan is giving me a false reading.

would you rather use a measure invented in Poland (Fahrenheit) where freezing point was determined by a random mixture of salt and water --even the water would have been of unknown quality and as for taking measurement at consistent temp and pressure --forget it.

Deg C is easy - consistent and mostly planet wide -- even in UK with their Brexit problems haven't advocated abandoning deg C.

Besides why use a measurement system foisted on you when parts of US (New England etc) controlled by overseas empire - England at the time.

New post 1776 country - choose your own system !!. You could measure in Horse length tails for example if you want but if nobody else understands it then ?????. and Engineering is really international these days.
Wasn't there some sort of glitch when Russian and US spacecraft were trying to dock at the International space station because of disparity in measurement systems !!.

At least deg C is consistent wherever you go with International standard. I think your beloved deg F has to be based now on the deg C standard.


Anyway back to the point --your CPU temp shouldn't be running at much more than around 35 deg C -- if even that --but GPU's can run hotter especially gaming ones.

If your system is too hot add extra fans - cheaper than replacing expensive CPU's. Ensure also plenty of space in your computer box and especially if you custom built your own system heat sink etc properly connected.
