What you're describing sounds symptomatic of the Explorer Working Set memory size growing and growing. You have 16GB of memory, so that shouldn't be an issue. But if the Paging File is too small, or for some strange reason missing (a no-no), or configured incorrectly, Explorer and Windows will have no way of managing that working set size. That could explain why a re-boot takes away the sluggishness, and it slowly creeps back when feeding Explorer large chunks of data.

Possibly restarting Explorer alone may produce the same temp cure. Try that to see.

Check your settings for Paging to see if something doesn't look right. These are shots from mine. I let the system manage the Pagfile.sys size.

    rivre:
Try to use these utilities to disable suspect 3rd party Explorer extensions & context menus:
ShellExView - Shell Extension Manager For Windows
ShellMenuView - Disable/enable context menu items of Explorer

How much free space do you have on C: when your PC is working normally?
And how much after you've rar'd a large file?

I'm just thinking that winrar, for example, creates a large temporary file. If C: filled so you then had little working space left, your PC would slow. (Hence my interest in resource monitor and task manager screenshots).

That would somewhat align with part of @tomcat's thinking.

Then perhaps the temporary file is deleted on restart.

    Late reply.

I think this may be the core of the issue for me. Reading this made me remember that I disabled the pagefile a while back. It was driving me nuts constantly accessing the HD when I was doing things and it was enough of an issue that I tried disabling it to see if things improved. It did improve quite dramatically - no longer constantly accessing my HDD, so I left it that way. But it seems it might be causing other issues for me. Like the one you described here. Also I notice if I browse a lot of large pages in Firefox private mode, eventually it crashes.

I thought 16GB would be enough memory that I could keep pagefile disabled, but I guess it's still a bad idea? Is there anything else I can do to keep it from accessing my HDD during the most inopportune times (in the middle of a backup or copy or extraction for example, or gaming)?

This may also be playing a part in my issues. Currently I have very little HDD space on my C drive. I do notice when using winrar on large ISO files it becomes increasingly slower until it finishes. I'll try to free up some space on my C drive to give it some more working room.
