    Difference with Used Size Calculations

    Hi,

I have been doing a little 'house keeping' and I noticed something a little odd. When I look at the properties of my D drive under 'This PC', it shows that the used space is 1.13TB (1,157GB). However, when I open the drive, sellect all items (all folders and files) and look at the properties, I only get a figure of 863GB. Why would this be? I have all files/folders viewable ('Show hidden files, folders or drives').

Does no one have any ideas about this. It's important, as I need to back the files up on a 1TB drive and I'm getting a difference of opinion here as to whether it will fit and whether I should remove some stuff. (Not to mention the fact that I'm just plain curious.)

I've run across this before and have come to the conclusion that you simply can't rely on file size or file count numbers reported by Windows.

I'd just try to copy what you want to copy and it will either start or tell you there isn't enough space.

I regularly copy stuff and often think I have, say, 10,000 ordinary data files to copy.

I select all folders and start the copy.

When it's finished, I look at the properties of the destination drive and am told it has 9643 files.

I guess you just live with it.

You might get a different figure with a dir command at a prompt.
