[1803] almost unuseable with one core processors

    Hello.

I need to vent some steam, so here it goes.

Doing a clean x86 installation on an old one core laptop with 2GB RAM makes the computer almost unuseable because w10 is so bloated with background crap that microprocessor usage is almost 100% all the time.

Replacing WD with AVAST made things smoother but it can barely run two things at the same time anyway.

I know I should be using some Linux distro on this laptop (puppy, mint, etc) but laptop user needs some Adobe software there.

Any ideas? I think nothing else can be done. v17137.191 is by far the worse of w10 ever released (in my humble opinion). I am noticing slowdowns on every hardware I have tried, no matter how old or new.

I have found out that dwm.exe (desktop window manager) is using 30% cpu almost all the time.

Do note that once you go 'off piste' with old hardware not supported or approved for a Win 10 build, there's no guarantee- nor reason for complaint. Maybe that's your situation...

A few are finding they need to use low level drivers from previous Windows builds. Does 1709 run on it?

I don't know because I don't have any 1709 ISO at hand right now. This laptop is somewhat useable provided you don't start opening more than one or two things at a time. Right now, connected to wifi and doing nothing, when I open task manager cpu usage is 6%; memory usage is 40-50% and disk usage is 4%. Not bad. But as soon as you start opening things, cpu usage skyrockets. Still useable though.
In the interim, I have disabled all eye-candy except for cleartype.

Some have reported CPU use problems with 1803, and you will find reports of that around. Some seem Defender related, ameliorated by disabling scanning of certain folders, others more persistent.

Well. Tested under Kyhi's BootCD. It's slow too because microprocessor is quite weak (just one core - 1.6Ghz; I guess little L2 cache). But so far is useable.

I am marking this tread as solved, even if I get more replies.

I hope you installed 32-bit Windows 10, it's really not worth trying 64-bit on such a low spec machine.

In general, I have found that the processor is more critical than the amount of RAM. A single core processor is not sufficient for the job.

In this CPU Benchmark Passmark comparison the Celeron Dual-Core T3100 1.90GHz is my test machine (System Two in my specs). That worked reasonably well with W10 x86, even when it only had 1GB RAM (and is perfectly acceptable now it has 4GB). The single core AMD V120 2.2GHz is in a machine with 2GB RAM, but that felt like swimming in treacle when running W10 (x86 1709), though it runs W7 without a problem.

Look up the benchmark for your processor on the cpubenchmark site, anything less than 1000 is asking for trouble IMHO.

Yes. x86 is installed. Surprisingly enough the system is quite useable, but you must be patient. My fiancée has got a similar older laptop but with a Core 2 Duo processor. I also replaced her slow 5400rpm HD with an SSD. The difference is quite abysmal, compared to this one (Intel Celeron M 420 1.6Ghz [1MB L2 cache] + Integrated Mobile Intel 945 express chipset family VGA). I am quite surprised this thing is running. After defragging and rebuilding caches, it's running quite acceptable. This is pushing hardware at its best it seems.

Your Celeron has a benchmark about half that of my AMD V120 - no wonder you need patience
