However the log captures everything so is big

    Long version:

the log captures every single activity on your PC be it registry read, write, process action etc by every single process, and so therefore the log is very very long and detailed.

I can understand your frustration- consumers should not be faced with technical challenges by products use by billions. But that's where we are.

Your laptop is specified to be compatible with 1803 by DELL
Dell computers tested for Windows 10 April 2018 Update and previous versions of Windows 10 | Dell UK

You could take this up with Dell, on their forum, or if new, see if you can return it to DELL.

    You can
    - live with it
    - return to 1709 and hide the 1803 upgrade
    - resolve it

I'm not going to try to comment on whether damage is done, but you will probably notice performance lags if doing something more intensive. Higher temperature tends to reduce life.

Another approach- similar symptom I think-
CPU load spikes TSP 2.11.3.17 Windows 10 1803 (180504) | NI Community Forum
You could try disabling superfetch and see what happens.

    Again a technical tool.

Feel free to search further: e.g.
    cpu spikes 1803

And you could try (very simplistically) a process of elimination:
    Safe Mode, Clean boot...

Just a guess here; I wonder if this has to do with the specter/meltdown? If it is, does Dell have a special BIOS upgrade for it?

Use Resource Monitor (from task manager) - example- Avast manually scanning folder- you can see the files it's reading.
