Thanks guys -- this is all very helpful.

I've also started to get tired of Avast's outrageous claims on other things, like junk files. I do run CC Cleaner, but don't let it touch the registry. And where Avast claimed there was 22Gb of junk, CC Cleaner found 4Gb.

I think what I'm going to do is with a new installation start using Revo Uninstaller.

I'll also switch back to using Windows Defender. After some searching I see it has a very decent reputation and you don't get all the 3rd party sales nonsense.

It's entirely possible that when Avast scanned you may have had your Previous Windows Installation present and by the time CCleaner scanned it was past the 30 days and it was automatically deleted. It sounds about the right size for an old installation.

I personally use Geek Uninstaller but I hear good things about Revo Uninstaller and for some time now.

I was quite impressed with Geek last time I looked at it. I use Your Uninstaller. It is also very useful for getting rid of oem crapware.

Your Uninstaller! 7 - Uninstall any unwanted software/program completely. Download for free.

Yes, you have to be very attentive about dismissing various options they want to give you. "Advanced" and "Options" are worth selecting to uncheck all kinds of bloatware.

I appreciate the praise for Geek Uninstaller. I'll have to check that one out too. Will it also help clean up previously messy uninstalls?

If you reinstall the messy uninstall then use Geek to remove it, it will 😇

Hidden away on the 'Builds' page is the Slim installer - same CCleaner but none of the bloatware or 'trick' options.

I personally use "Advanced Unistaller Pro 12" which I have been using for around 8 to 10 years now and find it very useful and have never had a problem on any PC which it has been added to which is many by the way.

I agree with most here in that I don't use the registry cleaners it has because I think it is best left alone but I have read /seen many videos of people using the registry cleaner tools with no side affects to their PC's......Most say it is very soft at the registry cleaning tools it has!

"Advanced Unistaller Pro 12" is actually free in spite of the name. It is a while since I used it, but iirc it was pretty good.

The slim version is always a week or two behind the full version for some reason. Wonder what reason that could be
