    Vintage: Acer Aspire One 722 {Ram Questions}

Yeah she's a vintage one, anyway I love her...well the PC that is.
Compact and so versatile. She was made to run windows 7 not 10, with Win10 on; memory is a premium.

My problem after looking for the real thing taking up most of my Ram, I found windows defender to be the cause. So now I'm looking for any and all programs that do not need a bunch of ram. For starters a Anti-virus Program that uses less ram then windows defender. I know I hate to not use windows defender but I don't see anything else other then of course the OS. Speaking of the OS, I checked online my old acer aspire just meets the requirements to run win10 32bit. (barely)

I'll be using it for my work on the tug as well as my port pilot training and hands on port work. I will manly use it to connect to the ships controls via Ethernet and TCP, I think I said that right. So many different cables. Anyway it will also be used for Microsoft: Word, Access and Excel. Light Internet usage. basically one application per activity, i'm well aware that to do more you need more ram. Look I know it's old and I'm not expecting it to pop fireworks or blow flames of speed every time I put in a command; but it's got to stop flooding it's self. I've lost a few important things well using it thankfully I save backups of the stuff to my external HDD, that was recommended to me by staff here.

I've already set everything to be geared for performance, so all the extra cosmetics of win10 has been either removed or disabled. I've also flirted with the idea of placing Linux on it, did it twice and encountered either a bad kernel batch or AMD processors don't like Linux? 2GB of ram is pretty crappy, true; I need this because it's a fully working Windows 10 laptop with out all that cheap trash and it's not flimsy like what they make for tablet PC's now. Hench why I wanted to keep this and invest some time and money into it. The storage and everything else work great. Just the ram has nothing in the gas tank basically it's running on E. I note someone (friend) mentioned about buying external ram? Is this really true or a scam. Also is there by any chance a windows 10 lite? Thank you so much for reading and have a great night.

PS: As for specs ask me, just be specific; if it's a bunch of questions then PM me. I'll be standing by until about 12:30 am, the off to bed for me; this captain needs his sleep, like it's literally required by the company I work for.

    Hi Captain.

While I'm not answering your question on a new AV I would suggest as a possible step, upgrading your ram.

Crucial has ram for your device. $40 (not sure about tax or shipping) Your device seems to have one slot so you would need the 4GB stick. As you are using 32bit OS you can only use of 3GB. Crucial says you have one slot for memory and tear down videos seem to confirm this.

Here is the Crucial Link. Confirm for yourself that this is the right device. (Acer Aspire One 722-0022)

Then here are the step by steps to replace.

Memory is static sensitive. Not as much of an issue when it is humid but still something to be aware of. If you don't want to buy a ground strap touch something that is grounded before starting the procedure and then don't go looking for things. Stay seated and perform. You should be fine.

External ram ??? Even if you could buy you wouldn't have port with sufficient speed to connect.

Hey Captain. I like to test AV programs. Today I have been tinkering with a PC with Windows XP and only 512MB of RAM. Installed AVAST and I noticed a big slowdown, although AVAST RAM consumption is usually fine. I removed it; installed new Panda Dome Free afterwards and I was quite satisfied with RAM used and responsiveness.
And by the way: how odd for WD to consume that amount of ram. It is usually very lightweight for most systems and it's the most preferable option for running alongside Windows 10.

Exactly, I assumed hey it's included so I'm golden. It's normally light correct; that's whats so
odd about the whole situation. Truth be told this things using a fair bit of ram just for running; excluding giving it any commands or running any type of application. I also did a clean install of windows 10 from the start, so no extra crap remains other then the OS and of course the files and what not. I rarely go on the Internet; this system I disabled auto connect to wifi sources for security reasons; so i only enable Internet access when I specifically need it. So I don't see me getting a virus or other bug; unless I purchased a dummy copy of windows 10.
    Caledon Ken:
Thank you for checking into it for me; I normally would have said forget about it and purchased a new small flimsy laptop, and would have had to keep buying the same every year because the cheap ones are just cash bait. If I can purchase ram, then that's one step I'd rather look into. I did look online for about a week or so before posting I'm just too busy to sift through the trash that's on the Internet these days; I did find a manual on my system and i think after skimming through, noted expandable ram. I wonder why the ship make I spoke with said I'd have to use expandable ram (Externally) so glad I won't have to do that. I don't want my system looking like some octopus next to all the bridge controls. I've already got enough for the US Coast Guard to complain to me about.
It won't let me multi quote sorry. I wanted to quote you both :-(

Crucial knows what they are doing. If model is right then the single 4GB will work although OS will only see 3GB.

Let us know how it goes.

Just a thought. If it's basically used as an off line machine, I would stick with Windows 7. I still have my Acer Aspire One, running Windows 7, Pale Moon browser and Libre Office, Malwarebytes and Avira AV. A good little workhorse, too good to trash.

Right! It's like a real laptop but all compacted into the shape of
a netbook, minus all the bloat-ware and extra BS or cheap trash. I completely agree..
    TO GOOD TO TRASH!

You might find 32 bit Windows runs faster if you have up to 3GB RAM (the max for 32 bit Windows). Consider adding a cheap SSD. I did this for an old 2006 PC and it made a drastic improvement to the speed. This is my System 2 in My Computers and it chugs along fine running the latest version of Windows 10.

Yes I like the idea of SSD. Did same on an old laptop I have.

Crucial will likely bundle these changes as they are flogging their drives.

    Thank You,
Well you folks have helped me a great deal and I'm relieved I don't have to trash a good
compact system. I will be looking into what you've all noted. Please should there be anything you missed you may PM me if you wish.

Marked Resolved: although these steps are one going and the fix won't be instant. However as far as assistance is concern the advice has been completed and noted, thus marked resolved.
