    Measuring Performance Windows 10

How do i know if the changes im making to my Laptop are actually increasing or decreasing the amount of time it takes for windows to finish starting up. By windows starting up i mean when its finished loading the apps in startup apps as well.

A simple (free for personal use) tool is
    BootRacer

Be careful about what you do. Before making changes to OS defaults please make appropriate backups so as to avoid needing to seek help to recover your PC.

There are more advanced and technical tools that give more detailed traces.

We constantly urge people to use disk imaging routinely e.g. Macrium Reflect (free) _ external storage. Having a disk image is not only a backup but allows you to recover from unbootable and unrecoverable situations quite quickly and conveniently.

If your laptop has a hard drive, you can try Fast Startup (which should be on by default). However this sometimes causes difficulty. The biggest improvement would then be to get a SSD, when you could expect boot to lock screen of 12-13s typically.

    Thanks for the quick reply.
I'll give bootracer a try and see if it does what I want it to do.
Is there a "native" windows solution that you know of?

I just measure boot time with my wristwatch it has a stopwatch feature. Once you drop in an SSD you won't worry about measuring boot time as it nearly instant as stated 10 to 15 seconds my notebook is 20 seconds fully functional desktop I use a PQI fingerprint reader for log in so that cut a little time too. I just start the boot and keep my finger on the reader and boom my window desktop is there including Classic Shell with the new 8gadgetpack my gadgets are a couple of seconds after that. I have fast boot turned off in my BIOS/UEFI and Fast start turned off in windows. I also have Sleep turned off

There is this- Windows, but not native:
    Windows Performance Toolkit
Download and install the Windows ADK | Microsoft Docs

    More technical (= non-trivial), as I said.

It is likely the biggest change readily accessible to you is the programs that start up per user.

A crude comparison would be to compare times with and without a clean boot.

Once again thank you. I'll have a wee play around with Bootracer make a few changes and see how it goes. I may possibly try your other solution too.

There's also this from sevenforums which works on Windows 10 as well, Restart Time - Windows 7 Help Forums

It's a restart VBS script which measures shutdown, BIOS and startup time.
