Very Slow Boot on Windows 10

    Hi Guys
I have been reading similar threads regarding slow boot on Windows 10, and i was advised to start a new thread.
I was having the same problem, and tried pretty much all the 'fixes' recommended in the other threads. My Lenovo ideapad 305 was taking over 7 minutes to boot into Windows. 2 minutes to reach the bootmenu, then a further 5 minutes for Windows Explorer to start ... So i decided to do a Repair Install with an 'in-place upgrade' recommended by Shawn Brink in another thread. This took approx 2 hours to complete, but now my boot time has halved to just under 4 minutes.I know that its not fast, but its twice as fast as it used to be lol. But it still takes 50 seconds for the Windows boot menu to load, then a further 2 minutes to get to the login screen, then another 2 minutes to finally load Windows. I dont know when this problem first arose as i hardly turn off my laptop, but any further ideas would be appreciated.

    Perform these troubleshooting steps:
    1) open administrative command prompt and type or copy and paste:
    2) sfc /scannow
    3) dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth
    4) chkdsk /scan
    5) When these have completed > right click on the top bar or title bar of the administrative command prompt box > left click on edit then select all > right click on the top bar again > left click on edit then copy > paste into the thread

    6) msconfig (in the pop up system configuration > move the dot from normal startup to selective startup > uncheck load startup items > click service tab > in left lower corner check hide all Microsoft services > in the lower right side click disable all > click apply or ok > do not reboot)

    7) taskmgr (in the pop up task manager > click on the start up tab > click on status so that the column sorts with enable rising to the top > right click on each row with enable and change to disable)

    11) download and install Windows performance recorder (WPR):

    12) Do not use the tool until communicated in the thread.
(The challenge will be finding someone to analyze the results)

    sfc - no errors
    dism - restore successful
    chkDsk - no errors found
    so no point posting anything

Doing option 6, 7 & 8 (reboot now), will post again after reboot

after doing option 6,7 & 8 my boot times are as follows ...
    Windows Boot Menu: 50 seconds
    Windows Logon screen: 1:12
    Windows Desktop: 1:50

    Boot time halved!!

So its something in the non-microsoft startup programs that i disabled in MSConfig. I shall then enable one by one and see how it affects the boot time. Keep you posted.

@update. Just enabled things that i think i needed in MSconfig, such as Macrium agent, and boot time in under 2 minutes! excellent.

    Thanks

    You are very welcome.
    Nice to see the progress.
The steps can be done out of order.
Please post 13 - 15 so that the logs can be troubleshooted.

Try using Autoruns to disable startup programs / service / tasks etc. instead of Msconfig.

You could consider replacing the hard drive on your laptop with a SSD. You should then be able to boot in under 20 secs and you overall laptop response will be much faster.

    Hello!

I have recently been experiencing a problem with my boot up. The boot up seems to be stuck at the loading screen with the windows logo and the dots made of circles. it takes about 2 minutes to get to the log in screen. I have even tried a fresh windows install to no avail. below are my specs:

    i7 8700 K
    Z370 Strix E
    32 gb corsair DDR4 3000 mhz
    GTX1080 Ti
    Samsung NVme 512 GB
    Western 750 GB HDD

I have even removed the HDD in order to see if that's the problem but it still persists. I even tried many other solutions online and I still can't get it fixed. I think this started when I changed a power saving state in my BIOS (something with s4 and s5) because my mouse's lights were still on even after shut down, and I wanted to power off all my usbs. When i switched back the setting to disabled, the long boot up time didn't go away.

I ran all the tests here with services off and everything and I think the times got even longer. here are the results of the commands in cm:

    C:\WINDOWS\system32>sfc /scannow

Beginning system scan. This process will take some time.

Beginning verification phase of system scan.
    Verification 100% complete.

Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations.

    C:\WINDOWS\system32>dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth

Sorry for bumping such an old thread, but I believe my answer will help someone

My BIOS boot times are good, below 17.5 seconds, but the Windows loading screen spun its circle loading icon for an additional 30 seconds each time. I tried all of the steps in this thread, including a restore point, to no avail.

And then I unplugged my USB HUB that had my flash drives on it and the problem went away completely.

You may have a problematic flash drive.
Plug in only one drive and run chkdsk x: /f on each one, one by one. (replace x with the drive letter)
