    Stunted operations

But there is an interesting happening in one of my accounts. When I try to open Firefox or Thunderbird I get a message saying both are in use, close those incidences and continue. What? Task Manager gives no such "in use" information. Also, I cannot open Edge or Chrome. Nothing happens. Google Earth opens but I cannot search. Network status indicates "Internet Access" ???

    Hi pedsto

If you expand Task manager to show details and then look in the Background processes you will likely find a Firefox and Thunderbird process. I've see this many times.

Hold shift key down and click shutdown, then power on to get fresh copy of Windows.

Not sure how this is related to Edge / Chrome. What error are you getting when you try them, might have to look in Event manager.

Thanks, love your logo. Couldn't find any items related to FF or TB in an expanded task manager. But saw quite a few processes that had multiple entries. ?? There is no error trying to open chrome or edge and Event Viewer (not Manager?) doesn't show any activity that I recognize. Doesn't a fresh start delete all third party programs?

No it just tells Windows to start fresh. No way was I recommending Clean Install or reset.

    This tutorial discusses Fast Start.

Turn On or Off Fast Startup in Windows 10

Holding shift and clicking shutdown bypasses the saving of info. More like a restart.

What is current status of Firefox and Thunderbird. Are you able to use?

No change I suspect that is because Fast Startup was already set as default. FF and TB still return an "already running" msg

You should be able to hold down the shift key and then click Shutdown. Or ALT + F4, Shut down Windows.

Please Run the following four bolded commands. Use a Command Prompt(admin) or Powershell(admin)

Do not key in info in brackets, there for your information.

ipconfig /flushdns (Clear the dns cache)
nbtstat -RR (release and refesh NetBIOS names)
netsh int ip reset (reset ip settings)
netsh winsock reset (Reset Winsock Catalog)

Lets see if we can't get Chrome and Edge working.

    Is anything on Internet working.

Sounds like Firefox, Thunderbird, Chrome and Edge broken.

Do you have another browser that you are using.

Could you try a Network Reset

Start > Network & Internet > scroll to bottom of right hand side.

Your machine will forget Wireless passwords and you may have to re-install customize any VPN packages you have installed.

When is the last time you scanned your machine with an alternate AV tool.

Might try Malwarebytes from malwarebytes.com May have to download on other machine.

You could also have a look in your host file located here

    C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc

Right click on host file, open with, used Notepad. All lines in file should be commented out, that is they start with a # sign.

Finally I would use the inplace repair / upgrade. It will upgrade you to V1803. Please be aware. I also recommend backing up data.

How do I do a network reset?

    Examples of alternate AV programs?

    Malwarebytes ran and was negative.

    Is ....system32\drivers\etc a file? I don't have that one.

V1803 already installed. When you have multiple accounts is the same OS used for all? I do have another account wherein all the programs work just fine.

This is a folder, not a file. Your system Hosts file is stored there among others.
