Very slow boot and general overall low speed.

Several people kindly tried to help when I first asked in the thread Slow boot, slow shutdown, and slow program starts. but, understandably, ran out of patience.

    The problem still exists.

The system is now Windows 1803 (OS Build 17134.165)

The computer takes almost 3 minutes from switch-on to displaying the desktop, and another 45 seconds for the audible indication that this has happened.

After that there is 4 minutes during which the disc activity l.e.d. is continuously flashing.

Since my first post I have installed iolo's System Mechanic. It hasn't discovered anything untoward. I have also received email from telling me that "You signed up for notifications when your account was pwned in a data breach and unfortunately, it's happened. Here's what's known about the breach:"

While that is of some interest, it does nothing to say what should be done about it.

It mentioned Pemiblanc. And further on it promotes

I use Roboform and see no reason to change, unless, of course, you know different.

Apart from re-installing the operating system is there any other way to solve this problem?

    Hi Syncopator

These are different issues, lets deal with the first one, pwning. The site will tell you where the pwning occurred, I was part of LinkedIn breach. The site usually tells you what they stole. I don't have anything financial in LinkedIn.

If they took passwords then you have to say where else did I use that password. It should have been hashed by LinkedIn but lets assume the bad people were able to get the password.

So you would go to the sites where you used that password and you would change it. You shouldn't be reusing passwords, some people do. You also shouldn't use a core password and surround it with numbers as it reduces randomness.

If they took answers to security questions you have to say where did I use those same questions because chance are you used the same answer. Same as above, go to those sites and change your security answers. I answer security question like a crazy person but everything is documented. So my oldest nephew might be Sail Boat.

I highly recommend a password manager that is set up with one long (at least 12 characters) complex password. There are trick to make easy to remember.

    Uninstall iolo mechanic please.

I'm not sure about your slow down or what you've done to diagnose so I would just be guessing. What cpu do you have, how much main memory, have you run diagnostics on the drive and memory? What kind of storage is in machine. Could you post a disk management shot.

    Thank you Ken.
I have absolutely no idea where the "pwng" occurred or what was compromised.

All my passwords are used for only one site.

As I said, I use Roboform.

iolo's System Mechanic was installed just a few days ago. Please explain why it should be uninstalled? All the reviews I read before installing it were enthusiastic about it.

Go to the pwnd site and key in your email. It will tell you where.

Sorry you did mention Roboform... I need to write down details.

I've heard the opposite on Mechanic and I don't like registry cleaners or optimizers. Your call, your device.

That is an eight page thread..... I'll give it a go.

Please answer my questions, should be 3 minutes and would like to see disk management. Really you need to update system spec

Okay I read thread. Didn't answer my questions.

    What CPU and Motherboard

    How much main memory?

What kind of storage is installed - provide disk management shot

    Have you run memory test?

What was outcome of drivers installs, did you get graphic drivver updated?

Did you uninstall all AV's except Defender?

If you clean boot how is boot time? (Not clean install)

Perform a Clean Boot in Windows 10 to Troubleshoot Software Conflicts

Maybe post screen shot from HDTune benchmark tab?

Do you have another drive not in use that you can clone to and then test. I assume cables to boot drive have been swapped / reseated.

Back to drivers, are your storage drivers from your MB vendor or has windows loaded generic MS drivers?

Hi, seems you never really were able to complete an adequate boot trace for effective analysis.

    Please note boot time
    a. from restart to lock screen
    b. from sign in to desktop appearing.

When your PC is nominally idle, post a screenshot of your task manager, organising any columns of interest high to low by clicking on the relevant tab.

Then do a clean boot and repeat the above.
    Post the 4 times.

Then copy a large file from the disk back to the same disk.
Post a screenshot similar to this:

Lots of my questions unanswered like did you try a clean boot, drivers, storage driver manufacturer, AV's.

As a quick test please disconnect your 2TB drive. To shutdown in preparation of disconnecting drive please hold shift key down and click shutdown. Nothing will be hibernated.

By the way is the 2TB an external drive?

Thanks for screen shot, we need command to find active recovery partition so you can delete redundant one. Not sure about unallocated space at start of drive

@Caledon Ken - note the two OEM partitions. As it is 1803, those are left over. (The creation of small OEM Recovery partitions was a 'feature' for some of 1803 upgrades).

Please post a screenshot of your Update History (find this in Settings) as it would help to know Windows Update is ok.

Shouldn't we delete unnecessary one. Cleaner for go forward position

Thoughts on unallocated space at start of drive?
