    Hi dalchina,
When I got the laptop back, it came with a paper this is what it says:
    Comments
OS is reinstalled due to unit slow performance issue. Unit passed all HP functional and component tests. BIOS version- F.23. Memory count- 4096 MB.

So all they've done is a reinstall and a cleanup. I did the same before that. I reinstalled, but it didn't help. Right when it came back it was basically alright, although it straight away started updating Windows, since it came back on version 1709. So I can't say for def that it was ok. Since the updates though, it's been just as bad as it was beforehand.
I spoke to an HP person yesterday, who played around with my laptop for over an hour. He agreed it was slow but then said no thats normal he's seen slower. I told him this isn't normal for a brand new laptop. He messed around and changed all the settings. Disabled Windows updater, prefetcher, cortana added a registry something, etc. I'm not happy about all these changes, I told him so. He said to try it out until Thursday when he will call back to find out if it has been any better. It hasn't! He changed the screen so that it looks very unclear, as if it's an old screen. I'm just not happy with any of the settings he changed, plus he only brought down the memory by 10% which still left it at over 40%. CPU is still over 30% when doing nothing. He pointed out by doing all these changes on another computer he got it down from 80% CPU to 20%. That doesn't make any difference to me since I don't want it to be more than 2-3% when doing nothing. I also don't want all these changes. It's not a long term solution.
I'll try anything that could work. He should call me back tomorrow, so if not by then I'm going to try ask for new unit. He wasn't very keen when I asked last time, but I refuse to be left with a brand new broken laptop.

Thanks for any help you can give.
    Awaiting your kind response.

Hi, I'm guessing from what you say that performance is better with 1709 than build 1803.
But there's another possibility- that it's trying to update to 1803 and failing.

Please post a screenshot of your Update History.

Also a screenshot of your task manager.

    Thanks.

I'm deffinately using the latest version of Windows 1803. It updated to 1803 the day after I got it back from HP. I even left it alone all afternoon to do it. Update history page in Settings is empty. (The update has been disabled by HP to try see if that sorted out the problem).
I've captured the About page which shows the version and OS build.

I've also posted a capture of the uninstall an update page.

Your def right. But it did have 1709 installed when it came back???
Puzzeling. What's even stranger is, that I only bought the laptop, in Feb 18 so that's anyway strange. Either way I need a solution for high CPU.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks

Well, I've been asking for a screenshot of your task manager for starters.

Create one when you think it's slow, and when it should be idle, if those seem different.

Then do a clean boot and repeat.

You say boot time is satisfactory, so we'll only look at what's happening when you've logged on.

Also get this prog and post a screenshot showing your RAM modules - use the dropdown. At 12Gb, you have more than one, I think.Laptop extremely slow- during start-up and generally-untitled.png

Download, run & post a screenshot of this:

Sorry I missed the bit of the task manager.
Here I captured a couple right when I started up the laptop.

By the way the startup was only ok while the HP guy disabled the superfetcher. I've restarted superfetch so it does takes a while to startup again.

I downloaded ChrisPC Win Experience, here is the screen shot:

Here is a shot of the HWiNFO64:

I actually removed the second RAM memory card which I put in when I sent it in to HP for repairs, I haven't put it back so it's just using 4GB. The memory doesn't seem too bad though. It does stick at about 40%- 50% but that's not what I'm worried about. It's the CPU and Disk.
I can do another Windows Assessment Kit trace if that will help.

    Many thanks.

After the above I closed down all programs and took the following screen shots of the task manager:

Hi, thanks. As you took those screenshots immediately after the laptop displayed the desktop, that can be misleading in that there's inevitably lots going on just then depending on what progs are configured to start up.

That said, it looks as we said before as if the transfer date is limited, although without the Disk column being organised hgh to low, can't be sure just from those.

Note you've a WER in the first. Have a look at the Reliability History and explore the red x's to find out what's going on.
(Type Reli in Cortana's search bar).

That's probably not related to the transfer rate problem.

RAM use is ok, and you've only 1 stick so no problem about mis-match, and nothing network-wise.

The WEI doesn't indicate anything unusual. Here's mine (you can see my specs):

Please post another screenshot of the task manager but wait a couple of minutes or more after the desktop first appears.

Then do a clean boot and repeat that.

Next thing to try: copy a large file back to the disk and post a screenshot of the Resource Monitor and task manager like these. Note the Resource Monitor takes a second or two to change from the 100kb/s display to show what's happening. (I copied a Win 10 iso file).

    About fourth time lucky!
I spent over two hours yesterday writing a reply when my laptop decided it had had enough, so it crashed. That meant that I lost all the work. I tried again a few other times, each time for one reason or another my laptop decided not to respond and I lost the work. Subsequently, I'm using my father's laptop instead.
Anyway, here is the screenshot that I took when everything was closed for a few mins:
Laptop extremely slow- during start-up and generally-capture6beforereboot.png

Then I took these next two after a clean reboot and waited a few mins:

Laptop extremely slow- during start-up and generally-capture8afterreboot.png

Here is a shot of copying over a 2GB file:

I had a look at the Reliability Monitor, there are quite a few errors. The one you pointed out from the Task Manager, was a hardware error, Event Name : LiveKernelEvent . There is also a few others, Windows Shell Experience Host, Name: MoAppHang.
Also a few Windows did not shut down properly.
These last few days it has been dreadful! It just takes ages to do anything.

Here is a shot of today after I shut all programs and waited five mins:

Laptop extremely slow- during start-up and generally-capture13nextdaygenerallyhighafterdoingnothingforfewmin.png

I'd be very grateful for any help.
To me it seems as if there is a general issue that the laptop doesn't know how to sort all the little things out. Like if the Superfetch doesn't work. The superfetch does seem to be running abnormal, but I've run the command to reconfigure it as zinou posted at the beginning of this thread, and it still runs with its own mind.
HP told me this is normal for such a machine!!!
I argued but it was to no avail.
    What can I do next??
    Thanks in advance.
I will try again in safe mode soon.

Hi, here's a detailed article on Superfetch - you can try disabling it.
Fix: High Disk/CPU Usage by Super Fetch - Appuals.com

Recommend you take measures to make the changes readily reversible.
    For interest:
Superfetch Causing Massive Disk Usage - [Solved] - Windows 10

I suggest you do this at least for a trial period, as it's possible there's more than one problem. Eliminating superfetch should at least allow anything else to become more apparent.

Could you advise your hard disk type? The transfer rate seems fine.

Given the other events, although unlikely, do a hard disk check- a good one is Hard Disk Sentinel (trial).
You can do a surface check too.

Then from an admin command prompt run
    chkdsk c: /scan

If ok, from an admin command prompt run
    SFC /SCANNOW
    and report result.

It looks as if you've installed ESET as your AV.
