    Windows Performance Analyzer error

I've been trying to run Windows Performance Analyzer to analyze a trace to resolve slow boots.
The version of the ADK I used to install the Windows Performance Toolkit is the latest one, for Windows 10 1803, as I'm currently on 17134.81.

After running the Windows Performance Recorder, with the command:

    Code:
"%programfiles(x86)%\Windows Kits\10\Windows Performance Toolkit\wpr.exe" -start GeneralProfile -start CPU -filemode -recordTempTo %userprofile% -onoffscenario Boot -onoffresultspath C:\WPR -numiterations 1
the ETL file is created normally, with no lost events or buffers.

The reason for using the command prompt to start WPR is because a few times, that I run it from the GUI, I got the error that "The trace has dropped events. Please record this trace again". So to avoid that inconsistency I stick to the command prompt.

When trying to open the created ETL with WPA, I always get an error that events (more than a million of them) are lost.

The GeneralProfile that I use (the built-in one), has the following settings:

Collector Name : WPR_initiated_WprApp_WPR System Collector
    Buffer Size (KB) : 1024
    Number of Buffers : 405

Collector Name : WPR_initiated_WprApp_WPR Event Collector
    Buffer Size (KB) : 1024
    Number of Buffers : 81

According to the error message, I should increase the number of buffers, as the Buffer Size I think is at the max. of 1024 KB.

How can this be done? Any suggestion for resolving this problem is welcome!

Hi,Have you tried to record the trace to an external storage ? Recording a trace into a busy local disk, may result in events loss.

    Thanks for answering.
As a matter of fact, after reading your posts, in the hp forum, I did try it yesterday.
Same results. More than 1.1M events dropped.

    EDIT:
Just for the heck of it...I just tried it once more, to the external USB 3.0 2TB disk!!!

Delete -recordTempTo %userprofile% from your command

I was getting the error, before adding it. And I saw that it was recommended by Microsoft, to avoid lost events. That's why I added it.

But I'll delete it and give it one more try!

    The command I run:

    Code:
"%programfiles(x86)%\Windows Kits\10\Windows Performance Toolkit\wpr.exe" -start GeneralProfile -start CPU -filemode -onoffscenario Boot -onoffresultspath E:\WPRFiles -numiterations 1

    and the result:

I would suggest to give it a try with the generalprofile only, don't add the CPU profile as the events captured with the cpu profile enabled are already included in the generalprofile.

    Thank you Zine,

I'll give it a try and let you know!

Something I noticed though, in your screenshot:
You have Version 10.0.15063 and I have 10.0.17134

The WPR_initiated_WprApp_WPR System Collector in your GeneralProfile has 813 buffers with 1024KB whereas in 10.0.17134 I have 405 buffers with 1024KB

and the message I get tells me to increase the number of buffers, which I have no idea how to do!!!

This is the big challenge with WPR. the buffers configuration, it suffers for a lack of documentation I think the number of buffers is not related to the WPT version, but to the machine memory size. I've 16 Gb on my machine. I think the lower the memory you have, the lower the number of buffers.
