    context menu 'open' video

When i right click on a video and select open my video opens in windows media player. I would like to edit the open value in the registry so it opens in another program. Can anyone point me in the right direction as to where this 'open' value would be. I have found 'open with' but that's not what i was looking for.

    Thanks in advance.

Change the default video player in Settings.

Thanks but not what i wanted. Because the program I'm trying to open the video file in is not a player but a editor. The registry hack may be more trouble but worth it in the end.

You could create a custom context menu entry... I've added 'shell' entries so I can open whatever from wherever

In my example, you would right click on shell►New►Key, name as you wish...
(What you enter in the (Default) string is what will show on the context menu)

Find the exe of the program you wish to use, Shift+right click to Copy as Path and use that as the info; for the command you will add a space and "%1"...
that will also serve as the path to the icon string, if you wish...

    right click on that entry►New►Key►command...
(note the space between exe" and "%1")

You could try 'Open with' (yes, I know you said not) - bottom of the list should be 'Choose another app' which should let you browse to whatever you want to open it with. Make sure you check the box so it then always opens with that program.

If that doesn't suit, then (rather than using a registry editor) try this free program:

    If interested there are various context menu editors, free and paid. Here's 1 of each;

Ok I'm having a little trouble. First let me show you an example of what i have done before...

    context menu 'open' video-example01.png
I can right click an image and get it to open with programs that i want. Here's how i did that...

    context menu 'open' video-example02.png
But when i found Video in the registry there is no shell option to but my program into. Example...
    context menu 'open' video-example03.png

When i right click on a video this is what i see....
    context menu 'open' video-example04.png
When i click on open it opens the video in WMP. How do i edit this 'open' to open in another program

Open with > Choose another app. Pick the app you want, tick the 'Always use this...' box then OK. If your app isn't listed, click 'more apps' and browse for it.

    As tried to describe. See
Choose Default Apps in Windows 10 | Windows 10 Tutorials
    Option 2, 3.

More on this there too. However I believe the control panel options have been removed in build 1803.

There should be no need to edit the registry directly.
