Slow boot, slow shutdown, and slow program starts.

Windows Version 1803 (OS Build 17134.48)

From switch-on to desktop start-up sound takes nearly two minutes, and after that there's still a lot of disc activity. Shutdown is equally slow.

Once the system has started it takes 30 seconds after clicking on an MP3 icon for VLC player to open.

Is this to be expected or is there something I can do to speed things up?

Do you have Fast Startup disabled? If not, try enabling it.

If it's still slow, try disabling some of your startup apps.

If it's still really slow, try defragging your hard drive.

Also, run Windows Update, too. Windows 10 got a bug fix update yesterday afternoon and is now version 17134.81.

I also found a old trick from Windows 8/8.1 that works in Windows 10, too.
Restart your pc 8 times in a row. Don't sign into Windows until the 8th time.

Not sure how much time this shaves off startup with a h.d.d., but it shaves a few seconds with a SSD.

    Thank you iTechieGamer
Fast Startup was already enabled. There is 18% of 929.2GB used on my C drive, of which there is 1% fragmented.I started to run Defraggler, but after 20 minutes or so it said that the remaining time was >1 day, so I stopped it.

I downloaded the latest update and the system is now Version 1803 (OS Build 17134.81)

A restart, or switch off and then on (are they the same things?) both take over two minutes before the desktop startup sound, after which several of the screen shortcuts are still having their default icons replaced by their more elaborate ones.

There is still a lot of disc activity going on after that. Until that dies down, VLC player still takes 30 seconds or so to appear after clicking an MP3 fille, but the time reduces to a few seconds once the disc calms down.

Can't say there's any overall improvement. There are uncountable flashes of information on the screen during both startup and shutdown, but perhaps that is normal now?

    Hi,

Can you take a boot trace ?

    Here is the steps:

    1. Open a command line as an Administrator (Run As Administrator)
    2. Type the following command in the command line Windows: cd %programfiles(x86)%\Windows Kits\10\Windows Performance Toolkit
    3. Type the following command to start recording the boot trace: wpr -start GeneralProfile -start CPU -onoffscenario Boot -onoffresultspath c:\wpr -numiterations 1 -filemode
    4. Compress the .ETL file generated under the C:\WPR path (very important)
    5. Upload the boot trace file on Dropbox or on https://www.transfernow.net/en/

Apparently there's a new security threat out their too.
    Rad this article on it.
    https://arstechnica.com/information-...-500k-devices/
At the minimum restart your moden & router. Leavee each off for one minute.
Repower on the modem first for a minute followed by returning your router on.
Important article for everyone to read as it's a serious threat.

In this case you have to download and install Windows Performance Toolkit:

    1. Download and Install windows Performance Toolkit https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/win...ed/adk-install . Choose the package corresponding to your Windows version.
    2. Install only Windows Performance Toolkit and not the whole package;
    3. Record a trace using Windows Performance Recorder using these options: https://justpaste.it/1g4sx
    4. Compress the resulting file

I've have the Performance Toolkit installed, will run it now.

Ok, I have the WPR files. When you say compress the results, do you mean zip them, or is "compression" something else?

    ....... Ok, they're compressed.
