32.0 GB (24.0GB usable)

I have had this issue on and off for sometime now. But it keeps coming back for some reason.

Sometimes I reboot and it's all good. Other times a system restore or a graphics driver update/reinstall does the trick.

I have already solved, for now, the issue of rebooting with ram missing here and there. Thanks for your suggestions btw. It turns out moving the sticks to different slots and dusting her out did the trick.

Windows 10 pro
Overclocked automatically with MSI's over clock genie. I have not specifically tuned anything to my preferences. The ram sticks are all the same make, model, and speed.

I would still say there may be some hardware issue with your DIMMs and/or DIMM slots. Your BIOS may be marking a DIMM or rank as bad. How many DIMMs do you have?

How frequently do you see this occurring? Have you tried running with only 16GB installed in different slots?

This hasn't been an issue for a while now. There's 4 sticks for 4 slots. All matching. I swapped the sticks around and even tried running one single 8.0GB stick. Windows takes 50% at that point, 8.0GB (4.0GB Usable)

I'm certain something within the OS has been set incorrectly when I had the missing ram issue. It would boot up with 24GB out of 32GB without the (Usable) issue. After cleaning and reseating the sticks it doesn't not have that issue anymore.

I have tried rebooting using all 3 options within the mobo, Eco Mode, Standard Mode, and OC Genie II. All boot up with 32gb (24gb usable)

Easy way to confirm if it's an OS issue is to boot to Memtest86 and see how much memory it reports.

I can run that but the bios registers the full 32 every time

The BIOS is most likely reporting the SPD data from the DIMMs, which is different than what the BIOS actually marks as usable.

Also, from the MSI 970A-G46 manual it looks like you can boot to the EFI shell in the BIOS Save &Exit menu.


If so, try running the "memmap" command to see what memory ranges are being configured.

I only had two options save and restart or discard and restart. Couldn't find another option as you posted. I did run memtest, no errors. I ran a fresh start windows 10 install/repair which fixed it once before. It did not this time.

This one really baffles me. Google/yahoo all show up with the msconfig quick fix which is also not the answer.

I have a feeling the problem may be somewhere software related. All hardware checks out. Nothing on this rig except the mobo is older than 3 years. The Mobo itself is 5 years old. Never overclocked manually and never mistreated in any way.

Did memtest86 show 24GB or 32GB? Windows itself normally does not modify the memory map - it just takes whatever BIOS configures.
