Indexing & number of items indexed. Is this normal ?

On all versions of W10 I notice that my number of indexed files grows daily by anything up to a few hundred.

If I rebuild the index then the number of files indexed files falls dramatically as can be seen here. I have a suspicion it could be caused by a particular program I use but thought I would see whether other users experience the same thing. As I type this the total is still increasing even though it says indexing complete.

This issue is still unresolved, at least in the sense that no explanation can be offered to explain what is happening.

I made a YouTube video showing what happens. Does anyone else see this happen ? I noticed this behaviour on at least the last two clean installs (so Spring and Fall 2017) and also the latest 1803.

Hi, not sure what you're experiencing.
What appears odd in your video is that opening and closing a file appears to cause the number of items indexed to increment.
    That should not be so.

Hazarding a guess, I'd suggest it's something to do with having changed the defaults related to 'User' in Indexing options. You could be indexing temporary files unnecessarily.

    Compare:

I would suggest you need to reset your Indexing Options to default and rebuild the index.

The first of these is NOT obvious. Try

The above registry change SetupCompletedSuccessfully = 0 causes Windows Search to clear custom indexed locations, add default locations and rebuild the index from scratch.

I do, yes (clean install of 1803, no changes to default indexing options).

When I open and close a document it increases the number of indexed items by one.

Currently on version 1803, build 17134.81 but I experienced this on the Creators Fall edition and the Spring 2017 edition.

Ah, not just me then. I also mentioned it the other day in Shawns Tutorial on indexed locations and he was seeing similar behaviour as well... but we don't know why it does it.

@dalchina I have rebuilt the index in the past and it makes no difference. Indexing is at the default settings you get with a 100% clean install. I haven't altered anything. Same on previous installation, all at default settings.

This is what happened last time I rebuilt the index and this is typical behaviour on my set up.

    Code:
    4th June... indexed items 25417

    Index rebuilt:

4th June 09:00, indexed items 12434 (indexing complete)
4th June 09:30, indexed items 19946 (indexing complete)
4th June 10:00, indexed items 20010 (indexing was in progress at this point, and I then saw it change to complete after a few seconds)
4th June 12:30, indexed items 20025 (indexing complete)
4th June 13:00, indexed items 20041 (indexing complete)
4th June 14:45, indexed items 20119 (indexing complete)
6th June 08:30, indexed items 21285 (indexing complete)
There is a massive initial jump in items indexed which I attribute to a program I use that has several thousand very small files of look up data. Once its all settled down though I see the constant incrementing each time I open a file. I also noticed it do this with .jpgs

I'm currently on 23108 items indexed.

No, not just rebuilding the index. Setting the Index Options to default was the idea. See the registry change I quoted, and read the document.

However, if this is an 1803 bug, that's another matter in that build. I don't have 1803, and don't see this happening.

Just trying the reg change now... and its surprisingly slow rebuilding the index. Been going 15 minutes now and up to 9000 items.

(the trouble-shooter came up as all good)
