Monitors keep turning themselves back on

Hi guys. I have an issue where my monitors keep turning themselves back on. I've scoured google (or more accurately ddg) and I've found little in the form of a solution.

I hear tale that xbox 360 USB controllers cause monitors to turn back on, and I do plug mine in for development, but the monitors still keep turning on when they are unplugged.

I've run through powershell and some other solutions regarding powercfg and various sub-commands but to no avail.

Can anyone lend a hand please?
    Many thanks in advance.

ps. Does anyone know how to change your profile picture on these forums? I'm new. :)

Hi CausticLasagne. Welcome to the TenForums @CausticLasagna

Hopefully the easy one. At the top of the page at the right is "Settings", click, then on the left there is a section "My Settings", third one down in this box "Edit profile picture"

When your monitors wake up, is your computer also waking up?

If so did you run the powercfg -lastwake command?

Maybe another member has the same display adapter could you share what you are using (internal intel, Nvidia card)

Thanks @Caledon Ken for the profile tips..
I've run powercfg -lastwake but it shows 0 devices.
I'm not actually putting the computer to sleep, just turning off the monitors and they keep turning back on again.

    Sorry I'm slow.

When you say you are turning of monitors do you mean you actually power down these monitors and yet they turn on ??

or are you issuing some sort of command?

No you know how you can set your computer to turn off your monitors after a while... like that. Settings > Power and Sleep (Screen) When plugged in, turn off after [TIME]. I have mine set to never but I've set up my power plans so that when I press the sleep button, the monitors sleep. They do turn off but then turn themselves back on. I'm going to mess with a few settings and see if things change...

It's usually a task that causes this problem.
Check the Task Scheduler (GoogleUpdateTaskMachineUA is noted to cause this issue)

Okay, so I've set the GoogleUpdateTaskUA to only run twice a week, and only check once per day so it's not as rigorous on my system. I also disabled a few other tasks too just to make sure.

I have a feeling it's my screen timeout settings how I set them to never and also whether or not an XBox 360 controller is plugged in as I recall reading elsewhere that they can keep the computer from turning off the monitors, you know while you're playing a game for example. It's not automatic though. I have to press a button (sleep button on keyboard) to turn off my monitors, so what I might do it increment the screen timeout to like, 30 minutes or something.

EDIT: So I tried those settings and also my controllers were unplugged and I also set ALL of my power plans to turn off the displays after 4 hours, and sleep the computer after 5 hours. My monitors still wake up. Grrrr Microsoft why u no???!?!?!?!?

EDIT2: I wonder if the action of pressing the sleep button to turn off the monitors is actually what turns them back on.... hmmmm. I'm going to put that to the test.

I have a similar issue where I leave my computer on while doing something else, they initially go off as expected but after a short while they come back on.

Wow that is really silly... So after all of this troubleshooting, it turns out that my monitors were turning on because me pressing the sleep button on my keyboard was actually waking them back up again.
I'm going to file a ticket on this to microsoft because that's just silly. If I press a button on my keyboard to turn the monitors off, they should stay off until I press another button.

@swarfega You might want to check some of the suggestions that other users have put on this thread and see if any apply to you.

As for me, I'm signing off. Thanks for all your help y'all. Take it easy.
