Laptop very very slow since windows 10 upgrade

Yes I agree - I upgraded to Windows 10 from 8.1 yesterday and noticed a huge difference. My laptop is much slower, takes ages to log in and if I leave it for 10 mins or so the screen goes black and I can't get it to come back on without forcing shut down.

Before the upgrade if it went to sleep I just pressed the on button to wake it up but now this doesn't work. In addition, a full battery yesterday evening lasted only a few hours - far less than before the upgrade.

Should I dump it now and go back to 8.1 or is there a way to speed it up etc?

I am having the same issues you describe and am upgrading from 8.1 Pro and a VERY FAST desktop
that scored 7.9 out of 7.9 on Win 7 Pro. 8.1 slowed it down a bit and 10 DESTROYED its performance completely.
I am going back to 8.1 for a few Months and wait for what will likely be many updates before I try again with this version....
    Best of luck to you.

Most likely, Windows 10 didn't destroy your performance. The in-place upgrade did that. Doing a refresh reinstall of Windows 10 will get you back to where you were with 8.1, if not faster.

slow as it it take about like 10 minutes for me to even use my desktop vs how 7 loaded on my laptop
    10 mins .. Holly ....!!!

I was complaining about few seconds slower than wds 8.1 compare to wds 10 ...
With wds 8.1 ...mine laptop loads almost instantly with bypass lock screen ... I give wds 10 few more days then roll back ..
(BTW ..my start8 is till good with wds 10 ...that's a plus ..)

I believe you regarding a fresh install but if I try that way, I get all kinds of errors including not recognizing my wireless adapter, graphics card Driver problems, etc.
It seems as though the " in place upgrade " is the only way I can do it.
I have a 128Gig flash drive, is there a way to use that to update instead? I tried yesterday with no success.
Appreciate any links or information on doing a fresh install from 8.1 Pro with 250 Gig SSD and 1 Terabyte HDD cloned without it saying " unable to update "

Of course you get "errors" like not recognizing your wireless adapter. It's a fresh install. You need to install the Windows 10 drivers provided by your motherboard manufacturer(Gigabyte), wireless adapter manufacturer, along with the graphics drivers provided by Nvidia.

    Run defrag

I understand the drivers for 10. Would you mind helping me get access to the settings menu for Windows 10. The screen just flashes when I click the settings icon.
I have tried everything I found posted with no luck and you seem to be familiar with it. I would appreciate some guidance with the settings more than anything.
Thanks for you're time and info
Edit: I just discovered that my 1 week old 1 Terabyte HDD was 27% fragmented as well as my 250 Gig SSD and am defragging both now. I suspect a much more responsive pc when complete...
I think the "fresh install" is the way to go for myself at least. Would have prevented this issue.

My experience thus far. I upgraded from Windows 7 Home preinstalled on my Dell xps 8700 pc with i7 and 16gb ram. Ran great on Windows 7 ( IMO the most stable Microsoft OS since XP or Windows 2000 tho I loved 3.1 aswell).

10 is slower for certain for me. Just general typing in Microsoft Office is SLOW. It seems to try to be intuitive, tho I don't have that selected. The drag is very frustrating. My pc was up to date on my drivers prior to update and I service it regularly keeping off stagnet software, trash bits and fragmented files. I do not won't to go thru the hassle of reloading Dell pre-installed software and countless updates.

Browser isn't terribly sluggish for me just seems a bit "broken". Failures to load pages or broken links is big issue for me. Slide scroll is very frustrating as the time frame from highlighting the side scroll to it actually moving is slow or wont work at all.

I realize many of u will say a "clean install" is necessary and most cases I agree. But it shouldn't be an issue with mine. I keep mine clean and updated and have since day one.

Slow and lagging are terms I am seeing all over the internet for this OS even after freshly reinstalled upgrades.
These are just my opinions and experiences with this OS so far.
For your particular problems, it sounds like you need to switch from Microsoft's graphics driver to one from NVidia, ATI or Intel.
