How do I know which apps and services to start at startup in Win 10?

My fan is running constantly. I had thought it was the HD, but the Geek Squad at Best Buy said they thought I have too many apps and services in startup, causing the CPU to overhead and fan run nonstop. Otherwise, they thought my HP ENVY 17 Notebook PC may need cleaned of dust or may need a new fan. Thanks!

but the Geek Squad at Best Buy said they thought I have too many apps and services in startup,
    They miscommunicated.

Welcome to the forum. The first task is to look at task manager and see what processes are using the CPU. With Windows 10 1709, one can also see which processes are using the GPU. If these processes/tasks can be ended, will the fan quiet down?

Alternatively, the fan might just be loud or you are particularly sensitive to the noise the fan is generating.

    Please
    a. post a screenshot of your task manager when your PC is nominally idle like this, organising any column of interest high to low.
To post a screenshot please use the icon above your post to the left of the video icon. Thanks.

Expect CPU use when idle to be under 3% e.g.

    b. Post a screenshot showing temperatures using e.g.
    CPU-Z or HWINFO

    Thanks.
