Will not Boot after problems with shutting down.

    Lenovo IdeaPad 710S-13ISK i5-6200U
    Windows 10

Used it on a normal day then all of a sudden it won't shut down. Kept going straight to lock screen. Nothing i tried would shut it down. Except long pressing the power key.

Next time i boot the computer it doesn't get to windows.

    1. Shows blue screen to ask me which language
    2. Troubleshoot or shut down.

When pressing troubleshoot the following menu is presented:

System restore - when pressed it asks me to select operating system at start but how? It doesn't prompt me for anything.
    Command prompt
    System Image recovery
    UEFI Firmware settings
Startup repair - tried this, it doesn't work
Go back to previous Windows version - tries this, doesn't work

I don't know for sure but I'm pretty sure windows update is to blame. I have mine installed in the background.

Honestly don't really fancy taking the laptop to a shop just to pay £30 for a checkup. Can anyone help me?

    Hi Alexander.

I'm hoping you have another computer.

Might I suggest you head to Macrium Reflect, down load the free version and create Rescue media.

    https://www.macrium.com/

Then boot your device from rescue media and try this to fix your GPT/UEFI boot.

    Hi Ken,

Really appreciate your advice but I'm a bit of a dumbass when it comes to these things. What is a rescue media? You mean i download something on a usb stick and then try to boot from it by changing the boot order in UEFI?

If there is a error message please write down the error message for us.

Please boot your computer with Windows Setup Media and from Windows Recovery Environment start the Command Prompt.

Please type below command into Command Prompt and press Enter key.

Following command will fixes errors on the disk and locates bad sectors and recovers readable information.

    Code:
    Chkdsk D: /r

Please replace partition letter D: with Windows installed partition letter. When computer boots into Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) environment the drive letter assign to Windows partition may not be C: drive letter because Windows 7, 8 , 8.1 and 10 creates a separate system partition when it's installed from scratch. The system partition contains boot files WinRE assigns the system partition the C: drive letter and the Windows installed partition will be assign any other drive letter usually D: drive letter is assign to Windows installed partition. The Bcdedit /enum | find "osdevice" command can be use to find out the drive letter of the Windows installed partition the output of the Bcdedit command is similar to this osdevice partition=D:. The drive letter after partition= is the drive letter of the Windows partition.

Please boot your computer with Windows Setup Media and from Windows Recovery Environment start the Command Prompt.

Please type below command into Command Prompt and press Enter key.

The following command scans integrity of all protected Windows system files and repairs files with problems when possible.

    Code:
    Sfc /Scannow /OFFBOOTDIR=D:\ /OFFWINDIR=D:\Windows

Reboot your computer to see issue resolves.

When you download and install Macrium Reflect one of the processes within it is to create rescue media. I very likely will prompt you to create.

You boot from this CD ( or USB) depending on what you created.

Edit: You need to start task to Create Rescue Media. Once installed look down left hand column, there is a heading other tasks. Expanding this, first item, create rescue media.

For the survey question today, for those users using Macrium Reflect.....

Did you add Macrium to boot menu on your machine?

This is what happens when i turn on the computer. No safe mode, no Windows recovery environment. Nothing. Just this.

I don't have a clue about the rescue media or how it works but I've just checked my disk with your instructions and both my D and C drive have no problems. Also there is no error logs when i try any other options.

What's confusing is when i select system restore and i've tried to do the same with cmd - it says "To use System Restore, you must specify which Windows installation to restore. Restart this computer, select an operating system, and then select System Restore"

I only have windows 10...there are no other operating systems.

Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) is a recovery environment that can repair common causes of unbootable operating systems.

You have posted screenshot of the Windows Recovery Environment.

Windows installed partition you need to execute Chkdsk and Sfc commands. Please use Bcdedit /enum | find "osdevice" command to find out the drive letter of the Windows installed partition and execute Chkdsk and Sfc commands for this drive letter.

Please boot your computer with Windows Setup Media and from Windows Recovery Environment start the Command Prompt.

Please type below commands into Command Prompt and press Enter key.

Following commands will repair Master Boot Record (MBR), Boot Sector and BCD Store.

    Code:
    Bootrec /FixMbr

    Bootrec /FixBoot

    Bootrec /RebuildBcd

    Okay firstly,

I have tried countless times the Bcdedit line that you mentioned but it doesn't do anything. Literally no result no matter how many times i type it.

Sfc /scannow does a scan that ends with 'Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation"

The only way I've found to list partitions was using diskpart. There is only one disk.
