Laptop slowed down in general despite factory reset

    Hi!

Happy to be on this forum! I used to have an account associated with windows vista a long time ago, so I know these forums can be a great help!

I am running into issues with my small laptop (HP 14inch Stream) and would highly appreciate your help and advice!

It has slowed down significantly, applications take a while to open and browsers a while to load.
So far I have only tried resetting it to factory settings which did not work.

    Any help would be appreciated!

    Thanks in advance

I fail to understand why HP sold these Stream laptops, as most of them only came with a 32GB "drive", which with Win10, is so small that you can't even do Cumulative Updates, let alone the six-month Version Upgrades.

I'm not surprised the Reset did not work, as it probably needs more available "disk space" than your Stream currently has.

If you want to reset it to factory setup, you could use HP Recovery Media --but you have to BUY that from HP, and it completely reformats the "drive", recreating everything from scratch -- deleting everything you currently have, in the process.

If you're interested, then report back on that, and I'll provide contact info for HP Customer Support -- which is closed on weekends.

    Hi Mark!

Thanks very much for your response. I have already backed up everything so I am not too worried about deleting anything. Also, it is currently ''empty'' due to reset attempts.

Trying to avoid spending money at the moment! Will try other solutions at first. If all else fails, depending on how much it costs to purchase HP Recovery Media, it might be cheaper to invest in a device with bigger disk space...
I think I have old HP Recovery Media CDs which I purchased with a different HP laptop - long stopped using as it also 'died on me'.
I am unsure if these CDs will work on a different model of HP laptop. The stream doesn't have CD capacities anyway.

Maybe I need to stop purchasing HP products!

I just received an error message that the PC has run into an issue and needs to restart:

    DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL (sdbus.sys)

Then proceeded to finish updating and restarted.

Just a quick update on what I have attempted to do so far based off the Tutorial:

    1) Tried to use Windows Defender Offline Scan but received error messages when attempting to access via Command Prompt and Powershell so went for the option of Malwarebytes Anti-Malware Free which worked fine, found a threat, quarantined and deleted it.

    2) Installing updates but run into several issues when attempting to update:
''There were problems installing some updates, but we'll try again later. If you keep seeing this and want to search the web or contact support for information, this may help:

Run this log collector and post a zip into the thread for troubleshooting:
    log collector v2-beta08.zip

The DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL bug check has a value of 0x000000D1. This indicates that a kernel-mode driver attempted to access pageable memory at a process IRQL that was too high.

From the posts above the computer has failed upgrades since Windows 1511 (Windows 1607, 1703, and 1709).
For failed upgrades Windows generates Panther files which are typically hidden.

Download and install Everything search: voidtools
It will index everything on the internal and external drives and make search more efficient.

Look for these folders and files. Use one drive or drop box to post share links into the thread for any files within the past 30 days.
The files have many error codes that can be decoded.
Often the error messages are ambiguous and this process may take a lot of time to figure out what blocked the upgrade.
However sometimes the problems are evident in the early scans.

Look for all of these files and post the files that were available:

    PANTHER logs
    C:\Windows\Panther
    setuperr.log
    setupact.log
    Setupmem.dmp
    setupapi.dev.log
    BlueBox.log
    Event logs (*.evtx)
    C:\$Windows.~BT\Sources\Rollback
    $Windows.~bt\Sources\Rollback\setupmem.dmp
    $Windows.~bt\Sources\Rollback\setupapi\setupapi.dev.log
    $Windows.~bt\Sources\Rollback*.evtx
    $Windows.~BT\Sources\Panther\UnattendGC
    miglog.xml
    Windows\Logs\Mosetup

    Hi Zbook!

Thanks very much for your response.

So I have downloaded the zip file but unsure what select on the folder - all option open up in notes except for one called compression which comes up as an Error:

    Windows Script Host
    Line 5
    Char 1
    Subscript out of range
    800A0009
    Microsoft VBScript Runtime Error

Will dowload the voidtools link but unsure which option to select: (my laptop is a 64 based PC)
    Download installer
    Download installer 64-bit
    Download Portable zip
    Download Portable zip 64-bit

    Thanks!

For the log collector there are 3 options.

First open administrative command prompt and type or copy and paste:
    1) sfc /scannow
    2) dism /online /cleanup-image /scanhealth
    3) dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth
    4) chkdsk /scan
    5) When these have completed > right click on the top bar or title bar of the administrative command prompt box > left click on edit then select all > right click on the top bar again > left click on edit then copy > paste into the thread

    6) Then run this version of the log collector:
    log collector v2-beta08.zip

    7) If the above fails then use this link and run the DM log collector:
BSOD - Posting Instructions - Windows 10 Forums

    8) If both of the above fail then use a camera or smart phone camera to take pictures and post images into the thread.

    9) And if both of the above fail open administrative command promp and copy and paste:
    Code:
    md "%USERPROFILE%\Desktop\CollectedFiles"&wmic /output:"%USERPROFILE%\Desktop\CollectedFiles\hotfix.txt" qfe list full /format:table&copy %SystemRoot%\minidump\*.dmp "%USERPROFILE%\Desktop\CollectedFiles"&type %SystemRoot%\System32\drivers\etc\hosts >> "%USERPROFILE%\Desktop\CollectedFiles\hosts.txt"&systeminfo > "%USERPROFILE%\Desktop\CollectedFiles\systeminfo.tmp"&findstr /v "Owner."
