    Windows Explorer

I noticed my PC was slow at starting programs and opened Task Manger and found that Windows Explorer is running at 20-30% continuously. Windows Search indexing service is disabled.

Update: Rebooted and it seems to have cured the ill, but why did it get sick?

Windows Search indexing service is disabled.
There should be no good reason to do that. Indexing only occurs (on a working system)
    - when the PC is near idle
    - when there are non-indexed or updated files which are specified to be indexed

So when indexing is complete, there is no overhead.
And functionally there should be no noticeable overhead.

Windows indexing is the only easy way to have text file content indexed, if that is of interest.

I would suggest you run some disk checks:
    Hard disk sentinel (trial)
    and run
    chkdsk C: /scan
    for each disk or partition

Right now, it is running as it should. chkdsk; sfc /scannow have been run and there are no errors on the disk, the problem is Windows 10, but I don't know what. As far as indexing, I have had major problems with it running frequently and slowing things down. Don't know how it works, but it has no fan with me - Locate and xSearch are much better and more reliable.

Suggests a file corruption problem with indexing. A normally functioning PC should not have that sort of problem.

    Again, try
    Hard disk sentinel (trial)

(I also use a 3rd party fast search tool routinely - Locate32- however there are times when having Windows search available is useful).

If you see high CPU use please post appropriate informative screenshots of your task manager.

I have had the same issue on Windows 7 & 8. I have 4 hard drives with each containing Windows 7, 8 & 10 so the problem is not them. I store all files on a backup partition which eliminates 99.9% of my searching.
