I actually had the VII Formula board and very happy with it. Only reason I've been contemplating about boards, is the host of numerous boards ASUS has. When I first built the last one, I was really wasn't absolutley sure what I was doing. The machine I plan on building won't be used for even a single game. Strictly a beast/workhouse of a machine for photography, design, video editing, and 3d animation and sculpting. I know this board would be sufficient, but based on everything else ASUS has... is it the best suited?

I doubt it, as Steve says the more cores the better, but you would be fine with 8 or even 6.

Ya all these companies, Asus, Corsair etc count on quantity and not so much on quality anymore, it seems. Some people get a lemon and others get something in perfect working condition.

And in 2018 Intel will be coming out with the 9th gen cpu. 9700K

Chad, the fact of the matter is, any CPU will do the work you do. The question is how long will it take to do that specific job. Things like video editing will use all the cores you can give it. The more cores the faster it will complete it. The trick is to balance cost and features with your budget and get the one that suits you best. How much is the speed of competing a job worth to you? (rhetorical question)

I guess I am trying to say that a 4 core/4 thread i5 will render a video just fine with good results. A 10 core/ 20 thread i9 CPU will do the same job, just in about 20% of the time it takes the i5. Problem is the i9 CPU will cost somewhere around $800 more and the Motherboard around $150 more. Somewhere in the middle will be a CPU that will do a good job in a reasonable time frame that will suit you just fine at an acceptable price point.

Another consideration is what add on PCIe cards do you use, if any. I know you have a 1080. Do you use video capture cards, Sound cards, Raid cards or anything like that. Make sure the CPU and board provide enough PCIe lanes to accomodate what you will use. The 8700K gives you 16 lanes which will be used by the video card. The chipset will provide 4 more for an M.2 SSD if you use one. An i7-7820 8 core CPU will provide you with 28 PCIe lanes and the i9-7900 will provide 44 PCIe lanes. That will be an important consideration as well. How many sata ports do you need and how many sata ports does the chipset of your chosen CPU/Motherboard supply? Those are many of the things you will want to consider.

Understood. I think I narrowed it down to which I was going to do and I appreciate ur input sir. What I'm trying to do is troubleshoot an issue with the current build cuz I'd like to pull what I can from it and make it a storage bay. Till I get the parts for the new one this is my workhorse. I'm suffering from stuttering and a god awful electronic noise randomly when opening a program. I've researched, I've been in touch with about 3 other ppl... can't seem to narrow down the issue.
