Rate my build?? Please :) 1st time, not sure.

    Hello.

I have decided to build an expensive machine.

By time I was done picking parts I was 2x the price I thought I'd be at. Oh well.

Please (if you are interested in helping a noob)
take a look at this and let me know if you see any glaring errors or maybe you have a better component I overlooked! Greatly appreciated.

I'm reluctant to go ahead with anything until I am confident in the parts list.

System Builder - Core i5-7600K 3.8GHz Quad-Core, GeForce GT 1030 2GB Low Profile, 750D ATX Full Tower - PCPartPicker Canada

Might be better to make recommendations if you could tell us what you will be using your system for.......gamming, video editing......etc......

A quick look at your list I would ask why the need for the network card, fan contoller, as well as a few other items........you should be able to contol your fans via the board, the board will have network capability......I am sure you will get more help with a little more information on your part....

    Yeah that makes sense...

Some of the accessories I picked just to be cool, such as the fan controller. It's a home entertainment unit that I want to be user friendly to everyone involved. I'll be using it for downloading, streaming, browsing and some older games. I reasoned that ... A. the tower is very big so I have lots of room, B. there will be times when my wife is using it and may want to turn the fans up or down, C. it looks pretty neat.

To be honest, I picked a few of the adapters just so I could go above and beyond the ability of the motherboard. In particular, I wanted ac protocol for wireless and honestly I wasn't really sure if the motherboard had this range. I'm not dumb but I am a huge noob at this so I really don't even know where to look.

As for the sound card and GPU, I probably don't need either but definitely have slots for both. Multimedia output will be via HDMI (does my motherboard support HDMI? Idk... hopefully) to a flatscreen TV. I picked low end multimedia cards that were well reviewed regardless.

One main concern is compatibility... although I doubt that's an issue, but I was wondering if anyone sees any glaring errors, and/or sub-par components that I accidentally slipped in there. So, how is the motherboard anyway? Most of the comments at the part picker said it was a good mid-range board that isn't tailored directly to overclocking but potentially affords this ability anyway. Would be nice to see more specs than the website gives, such as wireless ac/HDMI/USB 3.0.

I stuck with the i5 because of heat concerns from other users. It's still got the 'kaby lake' footprint I think and is upgradeable.

Why buy an older i5, when you could get a new gen i3? They're exactly the same thing. 4 cores, no hyperthreading.

I am wondering the samething.......from this list I would be looking closer to an AMD build with Ryzen 5.........the 1600X processor is sweet and for the price a strong performer......I have build a couple Ryzen systems for friends and one for the wife and they absolutely love them......

i agree and can build. as for the mobo i'd find a asus or gigabyte. msi just went through an issue of eating all the system resources, plus msi has a history of putting a strange brew of features on a board. i won't even discuss their bios.

    Thanks for the help guys.
I've posted on some other forums as well and have re-done my parts list, considering everybody's advice.

Please take a moment if you could be bothered, and review it one more time. I am reluctant to act at all without approval.

    System Builder - Ryzen 5 1600 3.2GHz 6-Core, GeForce GT 1030 2GB Low Profile, 750D ATX Full Tower - PCPartPicker Canada

    Quick Look:

    • Changed processor to AMD Ryzen 5 1600
    • Changed motherboard to ASUS Strix B-350X
    • Removed one SSD and added HDD 7200 RPM
    • Removed extra peripherals like fans, wired adapter, and fan controller
    • Switched RAM to Corsair Vengeance 2x8 GB
    • Downgraded from 5 TB Seagate to 4 TB. Still really on the fence about removable storage ESPECIALLY Seagate brand

Alright. Looking closer at the motherboard...

I am thinking about the Asus AS ROCK x-370

supposed to have onboard wifi (ac) and BT (4.2), as well as ample USB connectivity, which I want (so my hub can go downstairs with the laptop). If I pick this board, I won't be needing the wireless adapter, right?

Guys I am almost done, don't leave me now.

Third draft of this build, please review if you could. Thank you again.

In your experience, if the board has this capability, is it still beneficial to have a wireless card?

    Here's the build:
    System Builder - Ryzen 5 1600 3.2GHz 6-Core, GeForce GT 1030 2GB Low Profile, 750D ATX Full Tower - PCPartPicker Canada

    Notable changes:

    - New RAM (faster? better?)
    - Motherboard (as above)
    - Upgraded HDD to 6 TB (for all my downloading pleasure) 7200 RPM - this drive will be strictly storage
    - Switched removable memory to 2 TB WD My Passport (on advice in another thread, will use for backups instead of storage)
