I used that Silver stuff and just put an amount on it about the size of a postage stamp. I have not had any issues with it.

I wasn't all that sure how good it was for liquid coolers until you said it was good :)
FWIW, I still believe it is not the TIM but is the thick glue they use. It holds the IHS too high so it doesn't make great contact with the die. Remember along with changing the paste, they usually remove the old glue and use a smaller and thinner glue to put it back on. No proof or anything, just my opinion.

The costs of paste is so miniscule that highend we're only talking about a couple of dollars on 1-2K systems :)
The paste Intel uses is more for durability than anything else. But, I contend that if delidding brings temps down 25 degrees, the difference in the best and worst thermal paste is not even close to 25°.
