Contemplating a new build
So, my current desktop is old and it's getting time to be put out to pasture. My birthday is this month and christmas is right around the corner.
I am considering either doing a Core i7-8700 or a Ryzen 5 1600. If I do the Ryzen I will save about $140 on the CPU, which I can then put into my GPU instead. Or that will pay for my case, which I am strongly considering doing the HAF H500P.
I want something that will be pretty respectable for gaming (I'd be gaming most likely at 1920x1200), and I want something that will do very well with running virtual machines (Windows and Linux). I'll likely start with 16GB of RAM, and I'll likely do a 1TB NvME drive and a secondary 1TB standard SSD.
I'm working on figuring out my budget.

Budget is a big consideration. As far as gaming, what games as some are pretty demanding. Are you keeping the monitor and GPU from your current rig, or will those be new as well?

Not keeping anything from previous build. My video card is a Nvidia GTX 570. Will be replacing the monitor as well.
I'm looking at a budget of around $1,800-2,000 for the box, and OS. The monitor would be on top of that. Because of the high price of RAM today, I'll likely do 16GB of RAM and keep it to a single 1TB NvME drive to stay within budget.

For monitors, I'm thinking of getting a pair of Dell U2415 24" 1920x1200 displays.

I think I would wait until the 8700K is released tomorrow and see the reviews on it. Intel says it is the best gaming CPU they have ever released, but only time will tell. At least that would give you something to compare the Ryzen build to. It may be worth the extra money it will cost, or may not be.
I'm thinking I may do a new build too. I just want everyone to lay all their cards on the table before I decide which one I want.

My priority was win-7 so I got skylake x
If I were looking at only win-10 I would of waited on coffee lakes release.
The i7-7740x is supposed to be pretty good.

Oh for sure going to wait. It was the prelim data on the 8700 that got me thinking. Then, as i analyzed cost, i fiqured $150 saved on CPU would cover nicer video card or buy my case.
I am still paying off new floors at home. Gotta save up my pennies a bit longer.

The longer you can save for, the better the system you can get.
I am still more than happy with my skylake machine. Still performs to my expectations.

Yeah, i am going to replace my desktop machine from june of 2009. It is a core2 quad, q9550. 8gb of ddr2 400 ram.
I have had numerous machines at work along the way. I have a laptop with a core I5 with its about 3 years old. And I built my son a desktop with a core I5 6500 last Christmas. But it seems that it's about the right time to upgrade, or basically get a new desktop For home personal use

You may be able to donate it to a museum and get enough tax write off to pay for the new build.

I built mine in 2007 but it still runs good. Dell does make good monitors.
