It still runs surprisingly well for it's age. I did splurge way back in the day on an 80GB Intel X-25M G2 SSD. I was a relatively early adopter of SSD's. I had Windows 7 running on that.

When I decided to go to Windows 10, I just put a 240GB PNY SSD and installed Windows 10 onto it.

I recall I used to run Windows 7 on a 60 GB SSD and never ran out of space. You won't do that with Windows 10.

There is a windows update called the mixed reality update so really it says you can use 4th Gen Intel for Ultra Settings and the Gpu doesn't have to be that strong as well

I think anyone with anything above a IvyBridge will be all good in the hood

Put together a new estimate based on the Intel Core i7-8700K. Obviously more expensive, but this includes a monitor and OS

    • MSI Z370 SLI Plus LGA 1151 Mobo
    • Coolermaster HAF H500p

What do you need a 1TB M.2 for ? You could save $150 by getting a 512GB 960 Pro, and it`s a better M.2, And where are you gonna get an EVGA 1080 SC card from ? Certainly not EVGA, but you could get a SC2, it's only $20 more.

The 1TB M.2 would be for the OS, VMs, and games. I am a server engineer for a living. I will easily chew up 300-400 GB of space between vm's, isos and snapshots. I have a 512 in my work laptop and my sons desktop and i have to regularly delete vms and such to keep free space. Add some games to the mix and 1TB is gone in the blink of an eye.

Eventually i was planning to add another 1TB SSD to the box.

The evga gtx1080 SC was from NewEgg. Was $519 after a small rebate. EVGA GeForce GTX 1080 SC GAMING ACX 3.0, 08G-P4-6183-KR, 8GB GDDR5X, LED, DX12 OSD Support - Newegg.com

Maybe because it's what he wants or believes he needs and he's paying for it. That's good enough for me. Maybe the same reason someone running 1080p buys 2 1080TI's when 1 TI is overkill at that resolution.

I also prefer wiring as clean as possible. I would rather put in 1 larger M2 drive, then an M2 drive and other drives requiring power and data cables.

@pparks1, I figure you know as much about hardware as any of us. If you have decided on a 1 TB M.2, you know the prices, alternatives, pros and cons. It's your rig and you're paying for it. You should get whatever you want. I know when I build, I do.
