Laptop cooling methods, which are necessary?

    Good morning all.

Another night for me going to bed an a ridiculous time.

Anyways, I am wondering if purchasing a laptop cooling pad or cooler is really necessary.

    See pics:

Is this something that is certainly recommended? If so, can someone tell me which is the best one to purchase?
There are too many options, and the smaller once looks pretty cool.

    Suggestions?

It is a good idea to space your laptop off a hard surface to increase ventilation.

If your laptop is running hot when doing little, it's time to do some digging. Could be anything from dirt and muck inside (can be very hard to remove) if the laptop is older, to software configuration or a failing disk.

I chose a PC Specialists Clevo laptop which has large vents, and most of its back comes off- unusual these days.

Certainly they are a help, but not altogether necessary. By design it should keep cool by itself. Laptops usually have rubber protection feet on them. Make sure it sits on a flat surface to where the intake vents are not obstructed.

If you are having heating problems it may be due to dust buildup within. If you think you can, take off any back panels and blow it out with a can of compressed air. Most times dust sticks to the fan fins. I use a cotton swab to remove that. If you don't feel you can, a local PC shop will do that for you.

Notebook manufacturers make sure that their product doesn't overheat in most situations. And I mean this to the extreme, even Intel tests their cpu's with stock coolers in preheated rooms under full load for hours on end to make sure the cooling is sufficient.

One condition is that you place the laptop on a smooth surface like a table. Don't place it on your bed or on a cloth when you're using the laptop under high load.

If it does overheat, its usually due to dust build up, cheap shitty thermal paste, or a broken fan.

Thanks all! I'll definitely just resort to looking for a plain old laptop stand. Definitely one with holes. I do remember that when I had my old DV9000, the fans would get louder when the laptop was sitting on a table; however, when I lifted the laptop up with my hand, the fans would instantly get silent. Lol. HP is horrible.

Well your laptop's not bad, my laptop gets really hot when running a graphically-intensive application. I barely use it for that reason.

I have an MSI GE40-2OC. Core i7 4702MQ, GTX760m. Its a 14" laptop (great for walking with it in my hand, plugging a networkcable in while in the serverroom etc.) and it never runs hot.

The one thing I would've liked MSI to do differently is, the main heatsink is under the left side, where my hand is for the WASD keys while gaming. Its very uncomfortable. The right side of the laptop is cold.

I don't do anything special with my laptops. I don't game on them, I've got desktops and consoles for that reason.

    I like this type.
    Cheap and very effective.
And it tips the laptop to a nicer angle.
    And it was only $20.
