New Build Advice

Well the time has come for new build, usually do it every 8-10 years. I use a Antec Server Case for all my drives. I have two drives for work,1 for wife and my personal drive. Hoping this new build will last a while. Looking for expert advice and changes I need. Do no gaming,mostly office programs and DVD editing. Any suggestions would be appreciated. I will be running Windows 10 64 bit

Would this system be good for next 8-10 years? or
should I be looking at a X99 board ?

While the X99 boards are for performance systems, they're getting old in the tooth and lack many features the Z170/270 boards provide like native M.2 slots, Thunderbolt connections, 3.1 USB, and more to name a few.

If you're looking for pure speed & performance, the X99 boards are good, if you're looking future/feature proof, get the newer Z170/270 boards.

As to the Z170 system you post, everything to me looks good, but there's always the "this instead of that recommendation" so... For example, I might go with an 850 power supply instead of a 650, 32gig of RAM instead of 16, but these can be upgraded later so there's no need to rush into going broke right now.

Regarding longevity of the system, the tech changes too fast to say how good that system will be in say 5 years from now compared to what may be out then. By then it'll depend on how you view your system and whether you feel an upgrade is in order.

That's the way I see it.

Here's what I do. When I scratch build a new system I buy a the best motherboard and CPU in my budget. I also consider buying quality mid-ranged priced equipment. Overtime instead of just leaving the system as is I piece out the aging parts with new ones. Doing this I still have a rocket ship computer without having to rebuild the complete system at once. I hope this helps.

Though with your situation now, as I said get the best motherboard and CPU you can afford.

Think you may be right Jerry06, wondering if I should wait a couple months until the Coffee Lake is released? Thinking it will only be 3.5 GHZ stock,but the I7 7700K is 4.2 GHz stock. This is where I get confused,would the 4.2 be faster running Office 2016 apps? I hate waiting for a app to load and open,but I'm sure both wll be better then what I have now. I can wait for Coffee Lake if its going to be the better move.

Office 2016 will run great on the 3.5 GHZ. The DVD editing will also work great with either processor. The item to make applications load faster is the SSD.

PS: You picked a great video card :)

As @sygnus21 suggested, some of the best upgrades come not from the CPU but from the newer platforms. It could be to your best interest to at least wait and see what is coming out with Coffee Lake, at least as far as the chipset improvements, especially if you are wanting this rig to last you as long as possible and you are not in that big of a hurry. Sygnus gave some good advice, although I do resent him calling my X99 system "long in the tooth". :)
