Windows 10: PC refresh question.

    PC refresh question.

I finally found a GPU & ready to proceed with a refresh build. I intend to replace the following:
    Replacing these;

    CPU:
    i5-2500K 3300Mhz
    Motherboard: Gigabyte P67A-UD3-B3
    Memory: 16Gb Patriot PC3-12800 1600 Mhz
Graphics Card: EVGA GeForce GTX 560 Ti (Fermi)

    Replacing above for these components:
    CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 1700 8-core 3.0Ghz with cooler
    Motherboard: Asus Prime B350-Plus
    Memory: 16Gb Corsair Vengeance LPX DDR4 SDRAM 2133 (PC4 1700)
    Graphics Card: Asus Dual-RX580-O8G

    And keep the following:
    Monitor(s) Displays: Dell U2412M & NEC EA232WMi
    Screen Resolution: 1920x1200 & 1920x1080
    Keyboard: Apple
    Mouse: Wacom Pen Tablet
    PSU: Seasonic M1211-620 Bronze
    Case:
    Antec Solo mid-tower

I have Windows 10 Home 64-bit that is transferable to new hardware.

According to my supplier all these components match up well. The Seasonic power supply is 620 watts & the GPU recommends at least 500 watts. I am not into gaming but do some video editing & mostly photo editing non-professionally. My current PC's GPU is underpowered for some new software I have.

    So, your opinions?

    Looks good @GARoss

May consider getting a better case for better air flow.

The AMD wraith spire stock cooler may be noisy as it runs fast but you won't know until you try it so a aftermarket cooler may be needed.

You could get a gold rated (EVGA 650w G2 80+ modular)PSU for the same money.

I agree with the above comment regarding the case, I don't like cases that have fixed in drive cages, its bad for airflow. The case looks generally a bit old.

I would recommend the Fractal Design Define R5, I know its more expensive but its much more modern and will have better airflow. It is generally well reviewed.

Great choice for a mid size tower

Thanks, Worf, but I have a good 620 watt power supply now that meets the requirements for the GPU - Seasonic M1211-620 Bronze.

Thanks. I hadn't considered a new case as my current one is relatively quite. I was sold on the idea that heat rises so why put the PSU in the lower case where much of its heat will eventually effect the MB & other components? Put it at the top of the case with a good exhaust system to keep the case cool. I did add additional fans & have a manual fan speed controller that I turn up when I do render long video projects. I added a Tunig Tower 120 Extreme Rev 1 to insure good CPU cooling as well.

I'll re-check my case temps & will be able to evaluate noise once everything is installed

Okay. The hard-to-find RX580 GPU is purchased & should be shipped soon. Now on to the goods I mentioned at the start of this post.

Well, a funny thing happened when I began the order process. I planned on keeping the Antec Solo mid-tower case but found the Asus Prime B350-Plus motherboard was over a inch wider than my current Gigabyte P67A-UD3-B3. The Asus would crowd things a bit so I searched for a board close to the Gigabyte & came up with this one; a Gigabyte GA-AB350. I contacted Gigabyte for RAM advice & came up with 16Gb of G.Skill SDRAM-DDR4 2400 (PC4 19200) in which I can add another 16Gb that I doubt I'd ever need later. CPU remains an AMD Ryzen 7 - 1700.

As for the suggestion for a different case, the
Fractal Design Define R5 is too wide for my computer desk opening. The desk opening is only 9" & the Fractal Design Define R5 is 9.13". It does look fantastic but a shame it's so wide. I will shop for a different case, however, if cooling becomes an issue.
