Asus P5QC wont post, shorted CPU?

All fans come on then turn off
Green light on MB stays green.
So I pulled out ram and cables does the same thing.

Then I removed the LGA775 CPU, and the fans come on and stay on.
When I hold the power button in, the fans turn off.

It never beeps, but could the CPU be shorted?

    Hi sdowney717

Have you tested power supply or do you have access to one to test with?

I would also retry test with all addin cards out, drives disconnected and one stick of ram. Retry with other stick.

    Yes done all those things.
Next plan is to swap CPUs with a working system.

I did find this guy has similar symptoms with shorted CPU.
If cpu is ok, then MB is shorted. I figure something overloads PSU and it turns off when powering on.
Without CPU on the MB, the PSU stays on. so go figure.

That video has a root cause, wrong CPU in wrong socket. You didn't do that but I guess anything is possible.

I would be concerned with getting new CPU for trial, of course I haven't priced, as something caused your current situation.

I think you have to ask yourself what is MB is shorted, or flawed, and when I plug in new CPU will it toast it.

Wish I had better plan. Maybe find really, really cheap CPU that fits and test.

I need to find out, and I do have another working E6550 CPU with MSI MB.
I thought a shorted CPU would be detected and simply shuts down the PSU preserving the working parts, but I could be wrong.

In linked video, guy with shorted CPU put in another and his board was ok.

Good luck and post back findings. You peaked my interest and I'm sure others.

Logically the MB sort of runs with no cpu. So take the known good cpu and put into the Asus P5QC. Then if it posts, you know the other CPU is bad and you dont need to bother trying it in the MSI working board, at least that makes sense to me. I will not do this today, but will in a few days.

I put the E7400 'shorted' CPU into the working MSI board and it boots and runs fine.
So the Asus P5QC board has some problem.

Look at your capacitors for signs of distortion / bubbling. This can be the cause of many a "Bad" board.

Check if the pins in the socket are bent.

If bent, the result is similar to what you experience.
Sometimes using a sharp tool-knife or razor-you can repair them..
