    Ageing Power supply

    Good morning all.

I am using the Corsair TX850w PSU in my system but she has got old. I have had her for many years now and if my memory serves I bought this in 2008. Nessie has a ferocious appetite and I am concerned that this aged PSU in now unable to deliver what is required when pushed. (having some problems with freezing when gaming hard and all now points to this PSU)

Would like to replace her with a better rated (Gold+) and around the same wattage (unlikely be going SLI/Crossfire).

Not to concerned with fully moulder as case is large enough to hide unused cables easily.

Will consider any make but I do like Corsair and EVGA.

    Please post your recommendations

    Thanks for your time

    Andrew

Mr Worf, I would think if you are having problems with the PSU, a change would be in order with a 9 year old PSU. But, I think I would make sure your problems are, in fact, caused by the PSU. After all, they could be caused by that funky graphics card you have.

Another thing you may want to consider. You have expressed an interest in going X299. If that is the case, you need to make sure you have 2 x 8 pin ATX12V CPU cables, as all X299 boards, at least Asus and I am sure the others as well, use them. If you want to leave open the possibility of SLI, the only Corsair model which will have 4 PCIe cables and 2 8pin CPU cables is the AX1200i and above, unless they have changed recently. I know, I have one for that very reason. I also like Corsair and EVGA and have both brands PSU as well. I also think Seasonic is the best manufacturer and make a lot of the other manufacturer's branded PSUs. I am currently using a Seasonic X Series 1050W PSU. If you are sure you won't do SLI, a Corsair AX850 will do the job for you. It will do 2 atx 12V and a GPU but won't do 2 GPU's and 2 ATX 12V cables.

I believe the Seasonic X 850 will do most anything you would want, I'll check which model EVGA I have and whether it will do 2 CPU and 2 GPUs if you want me to. I would recommend those brands and models.

Corsair PSUs are still very good. The fact that Seasonic make some of Corsair's units should give you confidence. I have two Corsair units in my machines, RM750i and RM850i, both have been flawless.

EVGA, SuperFlower, Seasonic all make quality PSUs. I usually browse YouTube and watch reviews of the hardware I intend to buy to make an informed decision.

Thanks Steve Great point about going x299

I have tested the CPU with P95 and IBT and all passed. Tested RAM with Windows Memoory Diagnostic, Memtest 86+ and MemTest64 and all passed. Been running Aida64 stress test for over 2.5 Hours and no errors and temps and voltages (Using HW Monitor) are fine. Checked drives for errors and bad clusters using chkdsk and HDD Sentinel Pro with no errors. Used several nVidia drivers going back 2 generations.

Patched the games that cause this issue (Prey, CoD & SGW 3)

Hard to pinpoint the cause as it seems to only happen after 1.5 hours+ gaming than the screen just freezes and some funny static sound. Only a power recycle to reboot will clear. No errors logged in the event view just

All pointing towards a failing (over worked) PSU.

Any and all other suggestions welcomed.

    Thanks

Hi @worf105, another vote for the newer corsair PSU's. If you go that way, read the specs on the 2 different RM gold series. One uses 100% Japanese transistors, the other not.
A SWAG on your problem, since we have very similar builds except I have a regular vid card.
I sometimes get BSOD's with same symptoms your having when fooling around with overclock formulas. It always turns out to be low voltage.(one of my prime OC prerequisites is keeping overvolting to a minimum because of NO $ for letting the smoke out of any hardware LOL) This happened with my old Corsair PSU which was also a Corsair 850. I replaced it with the new one in my sig and that quirky problem still exists if I push CPU or VID too far on too little voltage. You might try raising voltage just a teany tiny nudge and see if problem goes away.

Ps: The PSU in my sig is the model with the 100% Japanese transistors but does not have the "control with Corsair Link software" because Corsair Link is too flaky to burden with more work. The 11 year old TX 850 PSU still works 100%. I just wanted full modular (no room for cables in economy case.
