Need to significiantly increase Dell Inspiron 7000 speed or donate?

The Series 7537 BTX was purchased in 2014. It was slow at the time but adequate given use. Times change, use changes, speed now totally unacceptable.

Pertinent info:
1. 750GB 5400RPM SATA HD
2. 4th Generation Intel Core i5-4200U Processor (3M Cache, up to 2.6 GHz), UMA, C1
3. 6GB Dual Channel DDR3L 1600MHz (4GBx1 + 2GBx1)

Assuming I can do so (I've only worked on Lenovo's, never a Dell laptop), my current thinking is to switch out the HD for an SSD of whatever speed/model the BIOS will allow.

I do not know the max RAM for this machine. If it's 8 I'd toss what's there and replace with similar Crucial 8GB.

If I'm wasting my time/money--please say so.

If the idea is sound but what I'm doing needs altering--please tell me.

I agree with Dude. Having Windows installed on a SSD would give you the biggest boost in performance.

2 questions regarding SSD's:

1. Omitting M.2 SSD from the discussion that leaves a) SSD (with incrementing roman numerals appended?). and mSATA SSD. How do I determine which is the quickest/stable drive that is appropriate for our Dell machine?

2. Is it simply a matter of lower price and choosing between Samsung and Crucial for the drive?

Mark, go to to Dell site and search your model. Then determine what SSDs it supports. I would then shop around to find the best price you can

I found this, but would still check the Dell site too. I tried but it isnt loading for me now.

I wouldn't waste money on that laptop. Everything in it needs a major upgrade.
It would be better to buy a new, better laptop.

A SSD and RAM is a lot cheaper, and will give a performance boost for him.

You don't buy a laptop for your wants, you buy it for your needs. Fortunately for the OP it's still good enough with SSD and RAM upgrade.

It's a 4th generation Haswell computer. That's not old enough to be tossed. It still has good performance. An addition of an SSD would not be a waste either. It is the most noticeable upgrade you can do to any computer. Plus, if he later has to upgrade, he can take the SSD out and use it in whatever he buys. No loss there. I still say Haswell CPUs have pretty good performance.

Per Dell's site, there are two SSD's that are compatible. One is 'Kit - 512GB 2.5 inch High Performance Serial-ATA Solid State Drive' and the other is the same spec but 1TB.

Sorry but my SSD knowledge, given all the different flavors, is limited at best.

I've never heard of an 'ATA' SSD?
