Ryzen 1700 on the ASUS Prime B-350 Plus motherboard
After going through the CrossHair VI and an MSI X370 SLI boards I picked up a B-350 AM4 board the ASUS Prime B350 Plus….
As expected the overclocking options from within the BIOS are going to have less tools to work with but it can still be done with some patience and a lot of trial and error testing….
As I am in a hurry to see what the combination of this Ryzen 1700 and this board is capable of I will do my initial overclocking using the AMD Ryzen Master Utility for Overclocking control.
Jumping right in I will go for 3800Mhz on all cores with a V.core set at 1.35v……..I will monitor clocks, temps, and V.Core with HWinFO……stability testing will be with Cinebench R15 and wPrime…..
3800Mhz was an easy task; temps were great but then again I have the system running on an open test bench with cooling from an Alphacool Eisbaer 280 CPU cooler……Thanks to Alphacool for sending me the necessary AM4 brackets….
Check out the temps while under load with wPrime…..not to shabby….
Left the v.core set at 1.35 and jumped up to 3900Mhz and all was good…….
So, I wanted to see what these guys would do at 4000Mhz at 1.35v but the girls gave out on me…..
Jumped the v.core up to 1.375v and hit it again…..
The Alphacooler is still doing a great job with the temps……
From my research on the 1700 some will do 4000Mhz stable at 1.35v but not that many so far anyways….I think I will keep mine at 3900Mhz with the temps I am getting and 3900Mhz with 16 threads active is really pretty darn fast…..
Now I feel like I am in the Twilight Zone…….Ryzen 1700s in my opinion is the best bang for your buck but there really isn’t a great deal of overclocking headroom on any of them……so, if you get your 1700 running stable and cool at 3900Mhz the money you saved rather than going for an “X” processor could go for a better GPU or a good set of memory for this architecture…..
What the hell, let’s see what happens at 4100Mhz……

OK, so I bumped up the v.Core to 1.458125v and did get it to pass stability tests….not a zone I would want to stay in 24/7…..being an old retired guy I need my components to last as long as they can……
I don’t know how the rest of you feel about these new toys from AMD but for me……well, I will be feeling more comfortable with more BIOS updates to include AGESA updates……..What are AGESA updates you ask…..
AGESA….. AMD Generic Encapsulated Software Architecture (AGESA), is a bootstrap protocol by which system devices on AMD64-architecture mainboards are initialized. The AGESA software in the BIOS of such mainboards is responsible for the initialization of the processor cores, memory, and the HyperTransport controller.
As for memory……more and more good news is coming thankfully……..for now if you can find any single sided memory with Samsung B-Die chips you should be able to get up to 3200Mhz to work correctly…

OK folks.......before you start flaming or jumping on the Intel band wagon I started this thread to hopefully help those who are interested in the new AMD processors and boards........
I am not an expert in anything, in fact I am just an old BIKER and I do mean OLD, turning 70 next month but I still enjoy a day on the road on the bike and when I have time I do enjoying farting around with computers.....
