    RAM Drive(s)

Anyone been playing about with RAM Drive(s) for Windows 10????

Set one up using SoftPerfect RAM Disk 4.0.2 64bit for my TEMP & TMP files and my Chrome Temp file.

Created a 2Gb drive for now to test and looks to be going OK

I tried(played around) using the one that comes with MSI mainboards for free, but gave up, as it slows boot time and shutdown time, and uses resources(better used for benchmarking), while the system loaded the files to RAM, another reason I do not use Samsung's RAPID Mode.

I think in times where latest NVMe drives are almost as fast as RAM, a software based solution like RAM-drive isn't necessary at all.

Though RAM Drive is a great invention, it really isn't feasible budget wise.

You see, the prices of RAM is expensive than SSDs (That is true even way back when SSDs were first introduced into the market).

I am not a fan of RAM drives. Long ago they were a good idea but modern systems have a sophisticated caching system that provides most of the benefits of a RamDisk with fewer problems. In most cases Windows does a better job of managing the best use of RAM than you could with a RamDisk. In some cases you might be able to do better, but the odds are against it.

I haven't needed a RAM Drive since back when MS-DOS 6.xx came out. Prior to that a RAM Drive was good when copying floppy disks to store the contents of the original or rearrange the files from more than 1 disk then write to new disks, usually about 5MB was sufficient. MS-DOS 6.xx would copy a disk to the hard drive then create the new disk.

Odd you guys started posting on this thread my PC friends.
I got my daily email from SharewareOnSale, and today this was the offer: Free RAMDisk (100% discount) - SharewareOnSale

GiliSoft RAMDisk helps boost computer performance and increase privacy by allowing you to use your system RAM as a hard drive to store data.
GiliSoft RAMDisk appears like a physical hard disk to the operating system and programs. You choose its size (depending on the amount of RAM in your system), drive letter, and file system. You can copy, move and delete files on it. Like a physical disk, a RAM disk can also be shared so as to be accessed by other computers on a network! The RAM disk bypasses the system hard drive, which is the slowest part of a computer. Freeing your data storage and retrieval from this mechanical disk gives your system an immediate boost.
    Main Benefits
    Blazing speed
Use a RAM disk to boost performance and speed up access to data.
    Quiet, cool operation
Unlike your system hard drive, a RAM disk contains no moving parts to generate noise and heat.
Extend the life of the hard disk
A long time to run one program will lead to the same sector of the hard disk be read and written frequently, there will be a bad disk sectors. Use a RAM disk can avoid such a situation.
    Protect privacy
Another reason for using a RAM disk is security or privacy. Once the computer is restarted or shutdown, the contents (data) of the RAM disk are lost (when the auto-save feature is disabled). For some services or applications, this is an important attribute that contributes to the protection of sensitive data or information.
I already have RAMDisk from MSI(came with my mainboard) but only played with it a little, as I need my 32GB RAM for virtual machines.

Why would you bother - with Windows 10 memory compression, what does a RAM drive add any more. The only time they are needed these days is executing winpse apps or similar eg minitool partition wizard when doing changes to C drive and this is built in.

When running Windows, creating a RAM Disk just takes away memory that can be used for memory compression, and coukd end up forcing paging that would not have happened otherwise.
