I'm confused by my results here. This is PCIe SSD which seems OK.

This is from my Lenovo X201 which is only SATA II so I suppose it is OK if a bit slow.

This one I don't understand. It is a 2006 MacBook Pro Core 2 Duo"2.16 which supports SATA. Apparently.

I bought a cheapo KingFast SSD last week and it plugged straight in using the completely standard SATA connector inside the laptop. The old drive it replaced was a 5400 Hitachi model that says SATA on the back and I did a clean install of Windows 10.

Why does this software say ATA and intelide not storahci? I don't even know what ATA is - I can only find references to PATA, IDE and SATA when it comes to drives and I thought the old IDE drives had different connectors anyway.

Any ideas? I don't care if I am winner of the award for worlds slowest SSD really - it is a pretty old system after all - I'm just am utterly confused how it is connected and if I can/should do anything or it isn't a problem.

lX07, I'm not familiar with mac or with the brand of SSD you have. But, from looking at the AS SSD info it looks to me like you are installed in IDE mode and the driver is the Intel IDE driver. It has nothing to do with the connection on the drive, but with the sata mode in the Bios. Basically how the BIOS interfaces and communicates with the hard drives. If your computer has and AHCI setting in BIOS, you should try using that which will change the driver and most likely the performance. Every SSD manufacturer I am aware of recommends AHCI mode, which is just a newer better way of communicating with the hard drives.

However, if you find you do have an AHCI mode in your BIOS, follow the tutorial below to change it or your computer won't boot. This will tell you how to change it, AHCI - Enable in Windows 8 and Windows 10 after Installation

If you can accomplish that, I suspect your performance will increase and the driver will change to storahci.

After seeing all the "magical" Samsung scores it's good to see that my Intel at least performs on par with another Intel M.2. This was after updating the firmware which made a considerable difference in the 4k schreiben. Didn't realize I had the sprache in German, lol.

    That you for that.

Macs don't have a BIOS (or at least not in the sense I understand from my PCs where there is a BIOS you can change variables on - I suppose they must have something to load EFI but there are zero things to change).

There is nothing you can do before getting to EFI shell as far as I know.

I might be able to do something in EFI shell before windows boots perhaps? Or would that be too late? Would booting to EFI have already decided on disk access?

I'm a bit out of my depth here, I'm sure you can tell... I can't even phrase the question correctly as I don't know what I'm asking.

EDIT: I'll try some Mac forums for their take on BIOS stuff. I still think I deserve a gold star for having possibly the slowest SSD speeds in recorded history

That makes two of us. But, it does look like you are in IDE mode instead of AHCI. Some older Windows computers don't have AHCI. IDE will work fine and will still be much faster than a mechanical hard drive.

That was the point. It is more than 10 years old. As my HDD drive was failing chkdisk a lot and I was having heat issues I though a new SSD at only $35 seemed worth a go as it would be cooler even if it wasn't faster.

There is no even remotely recent version of OSX that I can install so I have to use Windows 10.

I'll read-up on AHCI - didn't mean to go off on a tangent here.

None the less, without a doubt I currently host the record for the slowest SSD on TenForums (for one reason or another).

    That pleases me a bit

Works for me. Thanks. I'll take it as my avatar from now on - I never had one before.

    EDIT: Some results...

This worked. I followed the tutorial to set the registry and updated the mbr from Live CD to tell Windows to use AHCI as described here as I don't have a BIOS.

The overall score doubled but 4k write halved.

I think I better leave it how it is now anyway.

The score went up, looks good. Glad it worked. Try running ATTO, you should get a better score. I think it is a better test. But, looks like you may have to give up your gold star.

His score went up but at 4k speed cost. Not what you are looking for really. Most all work on pc happens in the 4k range and that is where you want to maximize speed if possible.

Having said that with those speeds probably not able to notice a difference.
