Want a new rig, but am WAY out of touch with the latest tech.

I have to ask, what is it that you do? You can run an entire server rack practically off a 20-Amp circuit.

Well my old computer gave up the ghost last night so this is a moot point for a while. I had to go get something NOW so I did. It will give me more time to research the parts i guess, but I hate to spend the money twice. I really milked that rig past it's lifespan though.

Microcenter has started doing something smart. They take name brand parts and put together gaming rigs at a fairly decent price. for $1500 I got an i7 6700(4.0G), with 16G, G.Skill RAM (3200) a 475 G ssd with a 2 tb hdd. EVGA PSU, 750Watts, GTX1080, all on an ASRock Fatal1ty Z270 Gaming K6 Systemboard. AND it's quiet as a church mouse.

It will keep me going for a few more days. Thanks for the help and sorry I'm cutting it short.

^ Sounds like a good setup for the price. An EVGA GTX1080 by itself is around $600.

Yeah man, that's it. LOL I bought an extra pair of RAM sticks to bump it up to 32GB's but they way they installed the CPU cooler blocks the last DIMM. Also i need to snatch the HDD's out of the old rig so I can get some data back. I have to find my passwords for my SAS and Winpatrol and CCleaner and...... well you get it.

I came THIS close to getting a 32 inch LG curved monitor. Then common sense and visions of sleeping outside in the doghouse for the rest of my life persuaded me to wait.

Do you run a bunch of virtual machines? 32GB of RAM otherwise is usually a bit overkill. Heck, even on my rig where I do run VM's, I only have 16GB of RAM installed.

If gaming a lot then there can not be too much RAM. Many "pro" gamers like to use RAM caching which speeds up loading times a lot, and at the same time reduces lag. In FPS games computer lag is your biggest enemy after network lag and the actual enemies in the game.

I'd disagree that games require huge amounts of RAM. 8gb will handle almost everything. 16gb certainly will. 32gb or 64gb is simply wasted in most cases.

Fortunately, RAM is relatively cheap which is why people buy so much. But I would personally save the $$ from going from 16gb to 32gb of RAM and put it towards a faster CPU, or better GPU. Those will benefit you more in gaming than larger and larger amounts of RAM.

Sure, any game in itself does not require much RAM, most is used in the GPU anyways. Read my post again, please. The magic word is CACHE. If you want to cache a beast of a game that takes over 30GB of disk space, then surely enough, you need that 64GB+ of RAM.

I did read your post. I umderstand you were talking about a ramdrive. However, I maintain doing this is utterly rare, especially with SSDs now.

I game, and the thing is, with a multiplayer game, loading insanely fast is ok, but games wait a certain amount of time for others to get in. Latency on the internet is responsible for so much more lag, than lag from your local storage.

So yes, somebody somewhere might make a ram drive. But if I were recommending a build, I would put my money towards cpu,gpu,ssd before I bumped ram over 8gb. (Unless like me, you run VMs. I did 16gb of ram and left 2 slots open for 16 more if ever I needed it).

Exactly. This was a BOUGHT not a BUILT rig. It came prepackaged. for $99 bucks I doubled my RAM. The next step up in CPU was $300 for the 7700 instead of the 6700 and THAT wasn't worth it. Any GPU I can get for $99 I don't want to buy. It will actually diminish the set up.

And do you want to know something? When I built the now dead rig with 8G of RAM everyone said I was crazy no one would EVER use that much......... and it STILL lagged on Crysis at max settings. (Of course the NSA super computer lagged out playing Crysis back then). i had to get Vista (brand new then) because it was the only OS that effectively could handle more than 3,5g of RAM. I had to get a video card with 4g more RAM to play 2013 current games. And finally reached the limit

Programmers, especially game programmers, don't see 32 or 64 gigs of RAM as a cushion or overkill, they see it as a challenge, a wall to punch through........ how can I max THAT out....... you can never have too much RAM anymore than you have have too fast a computer. Wait til you see what I build when I finish this remodel lol.

Instead of just 16g more,I was THIS CLOSE to buying this, for the current set up but like you say, at THAT price point I can get another GPU and go SLI or go ahead and get the set up with the 7700 CPU.
