    Upgrading existing System

    Hello,
I am wondering as well as confused on ways to upgrade the performance of my system. I understand that an SSD for my system drive could make a big difference. Things that come to mind is that I have and old MB and wonder if it is worth getting like PCI to some of the updated SATA versions. Maybe through a USB 3 port on there too.
Looking for opinions and any advice that may be important. Do the existing WD black 500 GB drives benefit any from the upgrades?
A secondary question is that I've noticed that when my computer is running multiple tasks, I've never seen the memory go to 4 MB in task manager!!???!!!
    Thanks

I hope you are ready to read lots of opinions. I am running an AMD FX 6300 6-core 3.50GHz CPU on my new ASUS Desktop with 8GB RAM and a 1TB HDD split as 150GB [boot/system] and about 750GB [for Data and large programs] after formatting, came from ASUS that way. My RAM now with 2 instances of Firefox open with multiple tabs is using only 4GB RAM so what you have now would be quite sufficient for me. A lot of things can rely more upon the video/graphics adapter as to how well or fast things like Web pages work. If I were to change the boot/system drive to an SSD I'd go for a clean install rather than cloning.

    Hello Berton,
Varying opinions are welcome. The more the merrier. My line of thinking is that most of the problem comes from the hard drive speeds. As this is the place I have gotten much good info, I start here. Really haven't investigated SSD or different types of memory or what has to be a world of complicated info on whats best. Thanks for your time!

Let's start with exact make, model and version of your MB as well as BIOS version, much if not almost everything hinges on that.
MB version on Gigabyte MBs is in the left, bottom corner. The rest you can find thru CPU_Z program.

    Hello CountMike,
    I've gotten this so far:

    Gigabyte Technology Co.

It's strictly AM3 (no +) MB so FX processors are out of question. According to GIGABYTE TECHNOLOGY Socket AM2+ - AMD 785G - GA-MA785GM-US2H (rev. 3.3) best processor for it would be
    Phenom II X6 1100T 3300MHz 6MB Thuban E0 125W 4000 F12f

    Howdy Sir,
Again, thanks. Going SSD is the best way to increase speed, I am guessing. Do you agree? For what I do I don't want or need a new computer, just want to speed it up some.

Glenn, a good SSD will work wonders for your setup. Go for it.

Well, an SSD is not going to actually speed up the computer, CPU, RAM and GPU are not going to run any faster. What's going to be faster are operations with disk, faster program starts, faster boot time and swap file in case there's not enough free RAM.
