For the record, I'm normally not one to pay 6, 7, 8 hundred dollars for a GPU, though I did pay nearly $600 for my current card. But, I do understand why some would pay that much for card (why I paid that much), especially if you're a serious gamer wanting the most out of them. There's nothing like running a beautifully graphics intensive game at max settings with butter smooth frames. This is where the men get separated from the boys where high performance is concerned; especially in GPU land. It's why I got what I got, and paid what I paid. In this arena, low end doesn't work.

And yes, when you buy one of these high-performance beasts, you'd better have to system to match. Most people who spend this type of money on a GPU already have the system to match, otherwise it's just throwing money away. We know this.

At the end of the day, not everyone is willing to pay for high end, but those willing shouldn't be questioned because "I wouldn't do it". As I said before, this is the performance section of tenforums. Here people talk about their high-end system and spend money on fancy cases, exotic cooling systems and, expensive GPU's, etc.... If you're not into that sort of thing, that's cool, but why are you here?

    My two cents.

I understand that too. Nowhere did I say, "I cannot believe that anybody in the right mind would ever buy this card".

But many could be playing at max settings at 1920x1080 on a 60hz monitor and getting butter smooth frames on a GTX 1070 too. A lot depends upon what resolution you are trying to run and how many monitors.

Again, didn't question the poster. But I can see that is what you read into it. I just stated that I don't usually pay more than $350 for my cards...so of course I'm going to not be able to use these high end cards, thus my comment of "I'd like to play with one, but because of my relunctance to spend the cast, I won't get the experience".

Because I click on "New Posts". And because I am interested in hardware and this is the 2017 hardware thread. I have to come here to see what others have to say about $400+ video cards because it's highly unlikely I would ever run one myself.

    My two cents.

You assume we don't understand these things and that would be totally erroneous! We understand better than you think which is part of the reason we do what we do.

As I said before, we're not you, nor do we need to think like you. It's not the fact that you comment, it's the consistency in which you do so in trying to push your view on us. This is a performance forum were thousands get spent for minimum returns and we're OK with that. Why is that a problem with you when it's our money?

Not sure I get your meaning here Steve. $699.99 (700) Is what I linked to on B&H for the FE. Didn't think that was a discount price.
Sorry for the delayed response, but when Nvidia announced the TI, the announced price for the FE was $699. So, what you saw was the MSRP for that card. As far as seeing high prices for it, until supplies match demand there are always 'scalpers' trying to take advantage of those not willing to wait. I saw an Amazon seller pricing the 1080TI FE for $950 not long ago. The official price is $699.99, which I believe, was the price of the 1080 when it was released. So, when the TI FE was announced they dropped the MSRP of the 1080 to $500-$550, I think.

I admit to being an EVGA Fanboy. My current card, a 980 Classified, was EVGA's top of the line card at the time it was released, I believe. Yep, I paid for that one too. It's still no slouch when it comes to gaming, but is about 2 years old and is getting crushed in benchmarks and gaming by the newer cards. Anyone who doesn't think I didn't cringe when I bought the 1080 TI FTW3, better just think again. But, it's what I wanted and I bought it. I fully realize it is not for everyone and not everyone wants or needs it and many refuse to pay that much. I have no problem with that. I didn't buy it for anyone other than me. I have friends who spend more than I spend on my computer on their hobbies. I have friends who are avid football fans and follow their teams across the country to football games. They spend a lot more than I just spent on their game Tickets, airline flights and hotel rooms to attend games. I can say the same about some who are avid golfers. I can assure you the dues to the local country club for the golfers are much more than what I just paid. I do neither of these things. I buy high end computer parts. That's my hobby. I do not look down my nose at those who don't and won't buy what I buy. I think everyone should buy what they want. If they are happy with their purchase, I think they made a good purchase. I also think a lot of people, my wife included, think I am crazy to do it. But, as I tell her, I don't have 100 pairs of shoes. And you think I'm the crazy one. :)

So, is my new card overkill? Absolutely, but I kind of like overkill. Does it bother me that most people think I am crazy for paying that much? No, it doesn't bother me in the least. I factored a lot of things into this purchase decision, but what someone else thinks was not one of those factors, and still isn't. But, if you happen to be one of those people who think I am crazy for doing it, I would probably agree with you. Yes, it's crazy, overkill and cost way too much. But I knew all of that before I pushed the buy button. That's just how I see it. Everyone should buy whatever makes them happy.

    Got it.

Anyway, I don't think anyone needs to apologize for what they buy. It's your money and you can do with it as you please. That's my attitude. No one is telling me how to spend my money unless they're are paying my bills!

As to being a "fanboy"... On the AMD side, I'm a fanboy of Sapphire's graphic cards which also tend to be higher priced than their counterparts. Still I buy them. If I should switch the NVidia, I'll be a fanboy of EVGA. You like what you like because you like what you like and don't mind paying for it

As for being overkill... I think at least 90 percent of us here have "overkill" systems. Nothing new here :)

I have always bought EVGA cards, always been happy with them. Their support is fantastic. I rarely have to use it, but am happy that it is there if I need it.

Some of what I have to say about $400+ US video cards is in the video below.

Run a game like this at 1080P with FPS locked into a 144HZ monitor. With a GTX 1080, the frames per second never move from 144. It's not just the response time, it's the smoothness and the clarity. A thing of beauty. I can set this monitor at 60HZ, 100HZ, 120HZ or 144HZ. I find a huge difference locked in at 120 or 144 versus 60.

ROTTR, GTAV, Sniper Elite 4, WD2, etc, I will give up graphics if required to lock into and maintain high (120) FPS. It's worth it IMHO and so are the video cards that can push out those frames.

One of my nephews runs the gaming tournaments. I had the privilege of joining them a few months back, just as a spectator, in an all nighter in a sponsored (not Nvidia) tournament. They all had 1080's or Titans and over 80% were running at 1080P. Smooth and high locked in FPS was key to these guys, whether running at 120-144 at 1080p or 100-120 at 1440p.

Everyone knows the high end cards are expensive. Some of us think the fun we have with them, trying out all kinds of things, is worth it. Plus these cards last forever. If I ever do decide to upgrade to Volta, I know one of my other five nephews will have a huge smile on his face when I hand him this EVGA 1080. All of them wish I would upgrade to 1080TI .

Yeah, a bunch of us guys were discussing 60hz, versus 120, versus 144 at work the other day. A couple of the guys hands down can see a noticeable difference and can identify the refresh rate. Other of us though, could not tell a difference. Its most likely we haven't been trained on exactly what to look for, but its hard to describe something as a night and day difference if you have to be told where the differences are.

I fall into that category of people who can barely perceive the difference. With my old man eyes, and surgery I had as a kid for a wandering eye, I just don't perceive it the same. (I also cannot see the 3D effect in movies).

So, there you have it. I live in lowly 60Hz land and see as well as I going to. When I build a new system for myself, I will likely get a high refresh rate monitor to give to my son and take his 24" Dell Ultrasharp.

One should never disappoint their Nephews. Go get a TI. You know you want to and you know you are going to. Quit fighting the inevitable, just do it.

Well for the most part I'm now wearing reading glasses all the time to both read and write/type. I think years and years of viewing monitors for long periods of time has taken it's toll on my eyes.

Anyway I too live in the lowly 60hz monitor range (for now), but I still want all the eye candy and frames I can get. That said, being a photographer who prints and sell his own work, color fidelity/accuracy is more important to me than a purely gaming monitor with huge refresh rates. But yes, I'll eventually upgrade to a 4K monitor, but it'll be from a photography point of view rather than a gaming one.

@ specialkone, nice video. Thanks for sharing.
