Does that mean you'd be willing to dump your 6850K for a Ryzen?

It was just the way you phrased you statement with "if" that made me question you :)

That said, I'm wondering how many people are going to dump their perfectly good 4-core i7 chips for a Ryzen? I've got an i7-6700K and I'm staying right there. And I'm not even overlocking (yet).

it honestly is not worth it intel is going with a new gen soon and people are like yeah AMD yeah i'm glads they're doing well but honestly what will happen if they have a drought again ? also you can only get so much performance from parts

That being said people might be a little upset when they find out there is no leaps and bounds like they would of thought plus the prices are about $25-50 dollars apart not all X99 boards cost sick amounts either

People will be spending just as much as they would if they gone intel they just think because a processor is lowered a few bucks it's a deal my cpu originally cost $700 i got it for about $540.00 + my Board that had $30 dollars off and the intel got discounted for being a bundle so i spent a good $845.00 on the chip and board that is pretty decent compared to most of them being $1400 and above the combo's that is

I would not be dumping any modern i5/i7 for a Ryzen. I will consider an upgrade to my own personal desktop which is a Core 2 Quad Q9550 that I built in 2009. I'm currently just using my son's Core i5-6500 desktop to run my VM's at the present time. To be honest though, for almost everything I do, I hardly see a difference between my old Core 2 Quad Q9550 and my son's Skylake Core i5-6500 quad core CPU. Even though it's 7 years newer. The only place I would really notice is would be gaming. But that could also be attributable to my Nviga GTX 570 that I have in my 2009 desktop too.

So are you considering a Ryzen system being you're looking to upgrade from your Q9550?

And yeah, you and I may not be jumping, but I'm sure a lot of people will be foaming at the mouth for an 8-core processor for under $500 bucks. Though as solarstarshines points out, you also have to factor in a MB with the price.

Seriously doubt anybody would "dump" a perfectly good i7 6/7xxx for anything else but it's a very good as an upgrade from older generation HW for a cheaper option with about same performance. I got stuck in older generation platforms few times and almost precludes upgrade on same platform. I usually go for middle of the road solutions, in this case it will be a Ryzen with 6/12 cores/threads but on a good, expandable MB capable of future upgrades.

Yes, considering a Ryzen system for a new build for myself.. I would be looking at the R1700, as it's going to be around $329. I usually limit my CPU purchases to around $300.

For Christmas, I built a desktop gaming PC for my 9 year old with the intention that I would use it too (helps justify the costs). So, that's the new Core i5-6500, with 16GB of RAM, and a 512GB NvME SSD and 2TB spinner with a GTX 1060 video card. It's working great for my VM's and for my son's games, but obviously we both cannot use the same physical computer at the same time.

Most of the time, I do my basic tasks on my MacBook Pro. It's what I am using right now. But my hard drive space is limited on my Mac, I don't own VMWare for the Mac, and I'm running my VM's using Virtual Box.

My old desktop (2009 build with the Q9550), had Windows 7 on it, on an 80GB Intel SSD and a 1TB WD Caviar Black. I bought a new 240GB SSD for it, installed Windows 10, and reattached the 1TB WD Black. As a general use PC, it works just fine. So, If I am with my son in the basement, I will often fire up that older desktop and work on it to keep him company.

So, I am considering upgrading that this year. I'm starting a new Systems Engineer job next week so my income will come back. I will look at trying to get as many cores as I could, 32GB of RAM, and around 2 SSD's (1 of about 512GB size for my main OS, and around another 1TB (maybe 2 x 512), as storage for VM's. I'd toss in whatever video card I could get around the $300 dollar mark for basic video editing and gaming with my son. I'm not diehard into overclocking or anything, so I don't have to spend money on fancy cooling setups, radiators, 200 case fans, etc. My basement is always quite cool. My Q9550 is overclocked from 2.83Ghz to 3.40Ghz on the stock retail Intel cooler and it never has trouble staying cool.

Good news is that I am not in a huge hurry, so I can wait for Ryzen to see if it's hype or for real.
#1). I just built my son's computer, so I spent some money there
#2). For my daughter (12) at Christmas, I bought her a new 12" MacBook, so I spent some money there
    #3). I haven't been working for a few months....so I haven't had my normal income.
#4). Gotta save money for new windows in my house as well as a new roof. Just did a new furnace, ac and water heater last summer.

That will be the real story at the end of the day.

Oh, and I know about living on a reduced income. Been there, done that. Add that I also have to balance my PC hobby with my photography hobby and suddenly there's not enough money to go around. It is a balancing act. The one good thing about being broke.... you learn how to budget

Anyway let us know how it goes when (if) you build it.

    You must be new here

People are always chasing those performance numbers. Imagine the high end system you could build with an 8-core/16 thread Ryzen 7 1800X chip at under $500 bucks. That's tempting, especially for many who have i7-4770K/4790K processors.

But as I said, I'm not going anywhere. Never used AMD chips before, don't plan on it now. That's me.

One thing you can say for AMD(I never had one though) at CPU-Z hall of fame, AMD takes five of the top six placements: CPU-Z Validator - World Records
