I'm not a big data horder either. For example, I will keep ISO files for OS's, but I don't keep them forever. For example, I won't keep my Windows XP or Vista ISO's as I would not use them again. Same for my Linux systems, I don't need a historical archive of CentOS Linux releases from the last 20 years. I will usually keep my version 6 (just the latest version), and version 7 (maybe the last 2-3). Other than that, I dump them.

I don't collect movies and such on my PC. No interest. But I know lots of people who do.

So you have a lot of friends and family, as well as yourself, who needs 80+TB of HD space in one PC? That's the normal user?

Dang, I must be in the extreme minority with my paltry 4 TB of SSD space in my desktop.

I only have so much software due to collecting Mac software including all OS versions and the recovery disks for each machine from 1998 to 2008.

LOL, define normal.

For some a 128GB HDD is abnormally big and the user will never come even close to filling it. For someone else a 80TB+ RAID array is abnormally small and the user will run out of space in no time.

For me 10TB is not quite big enough. But I doubt I will ever need 80TB+ space. That could of course change if I find some new hobby in the artistry world, like 3D asset creation or music and movie creation...

....just saying... ....:)

Well I have 4TB of drives in this computer and about twice that much in backup drives, couple of 1000 DVDs notwithstanding. So I could probably fill up up to 40TB.

I would not put you in the minority, with 4TB of SSD space. 4TB of SSD space is bragging territory.

Right, I get that. I've been into Linux since around 1999 myself. But I don't keep all of these old and ancient Linux releases. I'll never use them again, so I dumped them.

My Dell 13" ship date was getting pushed back into early next year. I canceled it and ordered a new Thinkpad. I don't feel like waiting till next spring for it.

Sorry, I didn't answer your question because I thought it was rhetorical. We were discussing somebody building a $12,000 PC, right. Clearly that's not the "average", or we wouldn't be bothering to discuss it here.

No, I do not have a lot of friends and family who use that kind of storage. I know of a couple of coworkers running arrays in the 40TB range for their home data environments. Obviously they are in the minority, as would the person here who builds a $12000 system. Clearly that's far outside the realm of normal users.

There is no winning here with you.
--If I say something that could in any way be construed as a criticism of who might need 80TB, you jump on my case and tell me that not everybody likes using antiquated hardware like I do.
--If I don't bother to mention anything about 80TB being extreme, then you get on my case ascertaining if everybody I know has 80TB and it's normal.
