Anyone here has any experience with QNAP NAS devices? I am curious about the Desktop models in particular.

I have been thinking about purchasing a TVS-1282T3 and am now wondering if it's worth the steep price?

On paper this device has everything I need and much more. I would order it with the fastest CPU and most RAM, and then fill it with the biggest and fastest storages available atm. 4x4TB SSD for virtualization, 2 x 256GB M.2 SATA for cache and 8 x 10TB HDD for other data. And possibly expand it later with the QNAP expansion enclosures, if needed.

Features and technology I am particularly looking for:
    • NAS
    • DAS (USB3.0 and TB3)
    • iSCSI
    • Virtualization (Hyper-V/VMWare)
    • App containers
    • Possibility to run as standalone PC
    • Media Sharing
    • Expansion possibilities
    • Powerful CPU and enough RAM
    • Support for major OS (Windows/Mac/Linux)

All comments, ideas and possible alternative ideas welcome! :)

One thing to consider, check if it's SMB 2 or higher compatible, if you turned off SMB 1.0 support to protect your system against Wannacry and copycat ransomware.
Shawn told me he couldn't(turn of SMB 1.0) because he then wouldn't be able to map his network drive.

I just looked, you would be good!

QTS 4.1 supports SMB 2.0 protocol to improve Microsoft Networking performance by 30-50%*. Besides, the further support of SMB 3.0 protocol for Secured Data Transmission (SDT) provides SMB encryption with secure access to data over the untrusted networks
Privileges & Security :: QTS for business :: NAS :: QNAP

That and it has generally great security features

Thanks for this. One would think it's compatible as it's an MS Windows Server 2012R2 Certified device.

Besides, I would put SMB on via a virtualized server anyways, so I could manage the version from there.
