@specialkone, I think there are some pretty significant price drops. I would like to think some IPC improvements and speed improvements have been made, but assuming they are the same:
The i7-6950X is 10 core/20 threads and came out at $1750, the i9-7900X is also 10/20 and cost $1000. That's a pretty good drop to me.
I bought my i7-5930K when it was first released and paid $585 for it. The same 6/12 i9 now is reported to be $389.
The current 8/16 came out at about $1100, the i9 8/16 is listed at $600.

Depending on performance and chipset upgrades, which there will be several, I think it is what I was hoping for.

As far as the 18 core monster, I think that is aimed at enterprise customers. They are probably the only ones who have software that knows what to do with 36 threads. To them, $2000 may be a very good price. I wouldn't know.

EDIT: that being said, everything I own is up for sale!

Yes essenbe I get all that. And if we compare them to that "significant" pricing on the i7-6950X it looks like a deal, or maybe shows us how overpriced that CPU is. We have AMD to thank for that.

Back to context, my entire build EXCLUDING GPU was $2,000 CDN with tax. That's case, cpu, MB, HDs,cooler, memory, power supply. The GPU at the time, almost $1,000. So it has been only Nvidia that wants 50% of the rest of your entire build. Now we can add Intel to that formula.

Yes there are options but you know we enthusiasts will want one of the top performers. It's about getting what makes each of us happy.

Everything I own is up for sale as well. Sadly, the warranties on my old body parts expired long ago so I have zero offers for any of it on ebay.

Well, the $2000 CDN part is what hurt you.

So with Intel's i9 lineup, you get anywhere from 16 to 44 PCI-E lanes, depending on the chip. AMD just announced that their entire "Threadripper" lineup would have 64 PCI-E lanes.

At today’s press conference, AMD has confirmed that the 16 core processor will for most purposes be half of an Epyc processor. This means that the two die MCM chip will feature 4 DDR4 channels and a whopping 64 lanes of PCIe, with all 64 lanes being enabled for all ThreadRipper SKUs.

That may be one of the things that has not been determined by Intel about the 12-18 core chips.

Could be. I was just going off Anandtech's reports. If it's true, though, then the speculation on AMD's price points is going to be very interesting. Seems like Team Red is intent on bringing their A-game this round.

Yea, there's no doubt AMD is going to bring their A game, but I don't think anyone can leave Intel out of the party. I think the top end of the chart may be a late arrival.

It's definitely an interesting time for CPUs. I'd love to see Intel and AMD have a proper battle for supremacy. Hopefully that's what's starting with this cycle, because it would be great for us consumers.
